Not sure whether this has been discussed before, but why on earth don't the BBC utilise this woman's amazing talent on National news. She regularly appears on the News Channel, but once once or twice on National News. Seems a bit ridiculous. I recall a piece in the Guardian some years ago, around the time of the Iraq war when the journalist posed the same question..

Does anyone care to shed some light.

I don't have an answer, but she did do an extended report on Newsnight earlier this week. I completely agree, though; she should be used on BBC One far more frequently. Her talent is wasted on BBC World. Yes, it gets many millions of viewers worldwide, but the BBC is a British service and I think the best journalists should be used on the domestic outlets over and above international ones.

I think if she were to present that National's a few people would get sick of her voice.

I appreciate shes a good reporter and presenter, but on BBC World News yes. I just can't see the British public taking to her with the voice she has - what is it? Canadian-Irish mix?

She's better then their National news female presenters all combined. She does a lot of field work, better then to be locked up in the studio.

Speaking of accents, there's one BBC News channel woman (Juliet Dunlop is the name I think) who appeared several times on BBC World which is a bad decision. It's hard to understand her accent, I'm not sure which one it is, Scottish maybe? Confused Idea

Falls on the floor aghast with the mere suggestion!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Juliet Dunlop is indeed Scottish and - I have to say - has no stronger or complicated an accent than Lyse Doucet or Komla Dumor or Linette Tye or Alastair Yates or Zeinab Badawi or anyone else on BBC News, for that matter. Juliet's accent is rather simple to comprehend. I am surprised that you (of all people, ginnyfan) find it hard to comprehend!! Isn't it just as "unique" as Hala Gorani's accent, for example? Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Anyway, back to Lyse Doucet - she should never appear on BBC Domestic output and should only be utilized on BBC World!!!!!! In other words - you are not getting her. She is ours!! LOL.

Joking aside, as much as I love her style of presentation and her heroic and formidable status on World, I think Lyse is far better suited to the international channel and (perhaps Newsnight aside) her type of coverage would not be given justice on Network. I know that sounds rather harsh and suggests the Nationals are tabloidy - I don't mean that to be the case at all. Lyse is a World or Newsnight or (heaven forbid) Channel 4 News kinda anchor and correspondent.

she is too good for the license fee payer, that's why she is never on domestic bbc.

I find Lyse much more tolerable (enjoyable really) than that God-awful Robert Peston! If anyone should get on the viewing public's nerves, it should be him!

Sorry, Joshua, forgot to mention - Lyse is indeed Canadian.

Believe that Lyse is from Newfoundland, which has quite a distinctive accent, and a bit different to "generic Canadian".

I suspect Lyse is happy working for BBC World News- as she gets to combine presenting in studio with field-presenting from international locations with great opportunities for real journalism. I suspect that working on the domestic channels would be less interesting to her, as she'd probably have to do more domestic stuff (i.e. UK stories, which may be a lot less interesting...)

Lyse appears regularly on BBC News domestic outlets when there is major international news as a lof of the coverage is joint for these - either joint programming or opt-in lives (where both BBC World News and the BBC News Channel throw to a reporter at a fixed point where they pick up and hand back generically)

There is one and perhaps only one reason why Lyse doesn't do more on the main network... she's a woman and she's over 40. They are virtually invisibile on British television. Yes, the accent may play a part... but if Lyse were a man, given the experience and talent she has, she would be on screen every day. The same goes for the presenter line-up on N24 or BBC1. Lots of elderly men with young women.Look at Breakfast this morning with the god awful Robert Hall and the very good, but very young, Naga. Do you think that British television will ever pair a young man with an older woman? Not at the moment they won't. It's a disgrace.

I don't think it has anything to do with her accent. Barbara Plett sounds pretty much the same as Lyse therefore it probably does has something to do with her age. Whatever, it's all a bit rubbish that the BBC do not employ her unrivaled talents on the Domestic service.

I agree, and you do have a point. John Simpson is only involved in international news stories and he frequently appears on both domestic outlets and BBC World. There's no reason why Lyse could not appear more frequently on domestic programmes without becoming involved in domestic news stories. She could just report on international news like John Simpson. I smell ageism/sexism again!
