Surely a lot more correspondents based overseas than the few mentioned speak the relevant language. I'm sure I've heard people like Allan Little and Jon Sopel speak French; I think Steve Rosenberg speaks Russian; etc etc. I'd have thought that, in such a competitive industry, having a language or two under your belt is a massive advantage.

Yes, I believe Jon Sopel speaks French, but it was evident last Sunday morning that he doesn't speak Italian. He was giving BBC News 24 and BBC World viewers a look at the Italian newspapers, and as he was supposedly reading the headlines, he was actually reading from a small piece of paper which he constantly held in front of each newspaper.

Ich habe nie irgendwelche der europäischen Sprachen gemocht. An der Schule, die ich zu gezwungen wurde, wählte ein, und ich dachte, daß ich für Deutschen gehen würde. Ich wünsche wirklich, daß ich nicht hatte. Sie ist eine jener Sprachen, in denen, egal wie stark Sie versuchen, Sie nicht sie erarbeiten können gerade!
