Can someone please tell me how long ago the current NE&C set was done?

With the rebranding, I feel they could tweak the existing set very easily, just with a new desk and removing the white-on-red square panels.

Many thanks

I think it was late 2006/ early 2007.

I remember they were in a CSO studio for the weekend. I don't think this set is actually that good if I'm honest. They kept the exact same layout, but just replaced it with chrome and red walls. The worst thing is, they kept the old desk, which has been used since 1999, or the early 2000's.

I'd like to see a lot of tweaks for NE&C, but I doubt it will happen.

Personally I would prefer a complete refurbish, but realistically tweaks are as good as we're going to get...
and what are the chances of that?

Also, why does the region have two weather forcasters and two sports presenters?

I actually think it's one of the best regional sets and looks a lot more professional than so many others. The size of it is fantastic as well, and certainly puts N6 to shame!

Just because it's been around for a while doesn't make it bad.

I agree - the fact that the desk is old isn't that big a deal - I think I'm right in thinking that the main programme uses the sofa area and the large screen for the majority of the programme.

I think the whole studio still looks really good.

I think it is from 2005 IIRC. I think they should have kept the previous set, the red looked great, and didn't look old at all, for its age. All they needed was a change in titles.

I don't think it needs a major change - tweaks here and there would do! The desk is hideous and I don't particularly like the wooden floors, but really appreciate its great size and space!

Not sure the new graphics go with the set though...

Well Newcastle have benefited from a BBC quirk of the 1980s. When Newcastle relocated they were given a much larger studio than other BBC regions, as there was a hope that BBC kids shows would be made there - so a studio large enough for general production was built. However they forgot lots of other bits that were needed for studio production - and it was never really feasible. This left the local news operation in Newcastle with a studio far larger than most other regions - and network...

Interesting - i've actually been inside the Newcastle studio, and it is quite big. They certainly used to have two sets on either side of the studio for different programmes.

Noggin - when you say bigger than network, do you mean bigger than N6, or N2/N1?
