L 'Will be celebratory of London. It won't be 5.5 hours of grime and depression'

There will be no main anchor for the news output.

Dont know why this sounds worrying. So it will 5.5hrs of sanitized fluff and puff pieces? Unfortunately London, like every major city in the world has some mean stuff "going down." Does this "celebratory" version of the news present an accurate portrait of London? That can be discussed till we are all blue in the face. News should present the good the bad and the ugly. All sides. And for LondonLive to be London's Very Own... I think (personally) they should present "a day in the life of London". That includes all shades all colors, all sides. It has to be a delicate balance of stories. But off the top to say its going to be "celebratory", doesnt bode well in my opinion. If your product is known for being a "happy news-magaziney" type, sadly you wont be the "turn to" channel when stuff is going down in London. (Major breaking news). People will turn to the channel they trust. If you dont have investigations, consumer reports, breaking news... whats the point. Londoners will turn to the ITV and BBC local broadcasts. In North America (Canada/USA) most stations NEWS is the revenue maker. How do you build trust? That can be discussed as well. But having said that I will wait. Wait till they are on air. But all the while I will be giving LondonLive News the "side-eye."

Sadly, their editorial agenda doesn't surprise me in the slightest. When Evgeny Lebedev bought the Standard from Associated, the editorial changed overnight to how London Live's news output will be. However, the change in policy as well as changing from a paid to a free model has turned the paper into a revenue earning product.

London Live's news output has to stand out from BBC London and ITV News London to survive, however print and broadcast media are completely different and I think the youth slanted and presumably dumbed down editorial isn't the answer personally and should see how major cities such as New York or Toronto operate their local news operations. We'll see on March 31st if that's the case.

May just be an attempt to counter the Daily Mail approach to saying everything is terrible.

I don't plan on watching London Live at all, but give it a few months to bed in, then we can judge their "Agenda" and "Style"

I still feel its amazing that London doesnt have a 24hr news channel.

I still feel its amazing that London doesnt have a 24hr news channel.

There is only two for the whole country, if something significant enough happens in the capital it will be reported on those channels and it's more likely to get coverage than if it happens elsewhere.

Even Sky News doesn't make a profit remember, so a pure news channel for the capital would struggle.

As seen with the Vauxhall helicopter crash and 7/7, the NC and Sky News as they're based in London will be quick to react to such breaking news across the capital.

Channel One tried and failed. It may have benefited from Sky Digital and Freesat which the channel didn't have as an alternative outlet during their time, but I think London Live have seen that local model of tv fail and this is why they've gone for the BBC Three on the cheap format with a dash of news.

Sorry, I've heard that before. Doesn't makes sense to me. London is too big to vast, too crowed. Heck London doesn't even have even a proper 24 hour news radio station. LBC 1152 is only from 7am-7pm. Thats insane.
New York has:

24hr news Radio: (WINS and WCBS are not news talk stations with talk and feature programs. They are purely rolling news. Nothing else. WINS slogan is give us "20 minutes and we'll you give the world!" They been operating since all news since 1965.)
*

All of these outlets are able to make it work and make a profit. And thats in addition to the 8 TV affiliates that have news teams operating in the city. London is the largest ad market in the UK. There is money to made, but is seems no one wants to or knows how to make it work. Amazing. Seems to me London is a vastly under reported city.

Heck if Bay News 9 can operate successfully in Tampa Florida since 1997, I cant see how 24hr news couldnt work in a massive global city like London. I mean even the Russians figured it out.

But I guess if you've never had local 24 hour news channels, you couldn't imagine it working.

LBC News 1152 simply can't compete with the might of the BBC. What is the most popular radio station in London? It's not a local one. It's BBC Radio 4, a national speech station. Combine that with the audience for 5 Live and there's most of the speech market gone.

LBC's FM newstalk station has recently gone national on DAB with the agenda now focused on the UK rather than the capital and BBC London's radio station has woeful listening figures,

LBC has the talk station and then the 1152 "News" station. But they didnt make the investment in the rolling news station. I remember when NEWSDIRECT was launched way back in the day. It was a nice attempt but somehow they couldnt make it work.
Have a listen to 1010 WINS its a great listen: http://betaplayer.radio.com/player/1010-wins/

I remember watching the Vauxhall coverage and wondering why they were sooooo painfully slow even getting live pics up. The Theatre ceiling collapse coverage was almost a joke for getting on air live. Sorry to say but that was insane for a central london story to take that long to get some pictures up. I was sat there watching BBC and SKY and no one got pics up. Just stills.

Channel One didn't work because it was incredibly bland and didn't have the programming.

London Live has appeared on my Channel 8 and I live in Gloucestershire... No Signal reported though, is it actually transmitting anything yet or have I got a rogue channel that I need to get rid of?
