A question about Kirkstall Road (September 2017)

I was reading an article on Wikipedia stating that ITV had plans to close the Leeds Studios in 2009 but changed their minds. Where would Calendar have been broadcast from if the studios had closed?:

In March 2009, ITV plc announced that the Leeds Studios were to be largely closed in an effort to save costs following a reported loss of £2.7 billion for 2008.[39] However, seven months later ITV changed its mind, choosing instead to close the nearby studios dedicated to the production of Emmerdale and transferring production of this programme to Kirkstall Road which would be upgraded for HDTV production.[40]

My understanding was that until a couple of years ago Calendar was broadcast from a separate building on Kirkstall Road next to the main studios, there was no mention at the time that this building would close. Emmerdale was also in a separate studio on the same site, ITV instead just upgraded the main studios and moved Calendar and Emmerdale back into the main building.

I think the former Calendar building (ex ice rink?) now houses the ITV archive.

As can be seen here

https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@53.8021965,-1.5698263,3a,75y,2.59h,84.01t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1svRLcHyl9MymdBXR0KmhBMg!2e0!7i13312!8i6656

and of course 'The Leeds Studios' did close. Like it says, it was several months when it was decided to move Emmerdale back in.

Slight off-topic question but what's the big tall metal structure on the side of the ITV Emmerdale building? Go to Andrew's link, move left and go to the junction (with the white car) and pan to the right.

Yeah cheers Andrew, I've just wasted the last fifteen minutes playing with Street View's timeline seeing how many times the ITV Archive building has had a facelift Laughing
Critique and Steve in Pudsey gave kudos

What's the purpose of that tower structure (that's now recladded and has a big ITV logo at the top). Did it ever have a TTTV logo?

I don't think so (I presume you mean YTV!), until recently the external branding was never very strong, the building was just branded as '104 Kirkstall Road'. If you pull the street view car along the front forecourt where the big Emmerdale logo is, you can see a previous era with very little branding on either building.

I get the feeling they've gone go town here after they kept getting knocked back by the council to externally brand The London Studios. That little tower with they neon strip lights is what I think they wanted the LWT tower to look like.

Ah, I've got TTTV on my mind after watching videos of Mike Neville.

I do recall there being a Yorkshire Television sign on that building many years before the "104..." sign. I don't remember any logos or signs on the tower structure though. Incidentally the old Emmerdale complex further down the road had a frighteningly huge chevron beside the entrance Surprised

104 had signage outside about parking being reserved for guests on Calendar and Tonight (the magazine that followed Calendar - think I remember the name right?) long after the latter had been dropped.
