The titles you're talking about were launched in Sept 2000. The NE Today started in 2001 however.

My favourite... the Central News one from 1997.

Absolutely - one of the best BBC regional opening sequences of the pre-corporate era.

Personally I love the Look East Christmas theme from the mid 90s - sleigh bells a go go!

Central News 1998 - 2001 (ish)
Meridian Tonight 2002 - 2004
London Tonight 1998 - 2002
Granada Reports 2001 - 2004

Those sound way better then today's "Generic".

I agreee. Especially for Meridian Tonight and Central News. The BBC and ITV generic titles are all bland. I mean, BBC London has the same as Manchester (except for the final notes) and ITV is all the same no matter where you go in England and Wales.

If not bring back the originals, why not do an updated version of the theme!!!

I couldn't have said it any better myself, but I would add....

Calendar 2000 - 2003
North East Tonight 2000 - 2004
HTV News (Wales: The Trumpets) 2001 - 2004

I don't mind the Generic look, at least ITV are sticking to Generic where as the BBC Regions tend to peel off and do their own thing with it. The music and the ideas within the Opening Titles are good, but they start to lose their appeal after a while.

Though saying that Granada Reports tend to use their own thing compared with the rest of ITV News Group, they have the odd sound playing when the map zooms into the North West and their Headline bed isn't used in any other Region. (The quite fast paced one)

Never mind your regional news, try this:

The best news theme and title sequence ever.

With all due credit to The TV Room, TV Ark, TV Forum, or whoever's internet site I downloaded it from. I'm sure they'd agree this should be shared.

Yes that was great , although I really liked the theme it replaced (and prefered it at the time)

Would like a return to London Plus 1988, but only if they brought back the title sequence too:
