Seems to be a fairly minor incident in the scheme of things, despite - sadly - two fatalities.

ITV News is claiming to have the first pictures of this, courtesy of Yorkshire TV:

Two fatalities have apparently now been reported. Incident happened at Helpringham Fen which is on the Sleaford - Spalding line,

This is the same line that saw a derailment only a couple of months ago AS WELL AS the Nocton train crash too. Services are being replaced by buses.

Became aware of this event about three hours ago.

I was only on that line a week ago going to Peterborough. Kinda lowers my faith in the train service.

Why? How exactly did the railway fail in this incident?

10 people die on the roads every day.

Is that "train" really only one carrage long?

Yes.

You mean there is part of the rail network which can survive with only 1 Coach? By gum my local commuter run needs a train about 6 carriages long and even then half of us don't get a seat!

Nearly all passenger trains on the Peterborough - Sleaford - Lincoln - Doncaster line are!

My local line intersects with the above line at Sleaford, and most of ours (Skegness - Boston - Sleaford - Grantham - Nottingham) are 2-carriage operations.

yeah, these class 153 single carriage trains, known (dis)affectionately as dogboxes are unfortunately fairly common Sad

I take it you are a southerner who is used to having to slam your own doors when getting on and off and have a third rail providing the electricity.

6 carriages? What a luxury. The most you will get on non-Intercity commuter trains into Leeds, Manchester, Sheffield, Newcastle, in fact anywhere outside London, is 4 and most are just 2.

The one carriage ones are fun, I remember sharing the doorway with 7 other people when ATN provided one on a busy line at 5pm, most of the rest of the time they are a lifeline on rural branches.

Am I right in thinking that 4 carriages is standard on the Leeds - Skipton and Leeds - Ilkley lines?

Those red/yellow trains look really fab.....
