Why are a-level results newsworthy in the first place?

1. They reflect the standard of education in the country
2. The never ending debate on whether they are too easy. I personally found them harder than university work, and i dont want to belittle everyones efforts, but with a pass rate of 96.2%, if something seems too good to be true, it probably is.
3. Its august and there is usually no other stories in the news. remember the old annual number plate story?

There was a fair bit of coverage of highers and standards on Radio 1 last week. Can't believe it's three years since I got my A levels and now I've graduated...!

As a teacher im saying that A levels are not getting easier, it just that teachers are getting better at judging what questions may or may not appear.

I hate this pointless gimmick that is shown by all the news organisations every year. Does anyone seriously think the pupils are opening their results envelope for the first time when on the air? The fact that most of the time the pupils featured get straight A's suggests that they are the exceptionally bright kids the colleges have specifically earmarked just to make the college look good.

Agreed, it is totally pointless. I don't want to see anyone open their exams on air, and I certainly wouldn't want anyone to watch me open mine (indeed, when my SGs came through I sent everyone away so I could open them alone!) And when was the last time you saw this happen and someone burst into tears over their abysmal results? Never. It's fair enough to analyse the results (expect the usual "exams are getting easier") but this practice is just too fluffy. Surprised Breakfast didn't devote hours to it... Rolling Eyes

well its that time of year once again and i hope everyone has got the grades they were after in their GCSE's

what are the odds that on the breakfast programmes students will open their results live on air? 100%?

what are the chances that students will open their results live on the bbc and itv lunchtime news programmes? 100%

what are the chances that the students opening their results get A grades 90%

other grades ie B 10%
C 0%
D 0% ect

finally good luck to all and i hope you will get the grades you wanted

Not quite live - they've already opened their results! That's how they separate the thick ones.

I was under the impression that the schools knew in advance the results so advised the TV crews who to film. After all the universities know the individual A-level results a week before the students recieve their results.

Schools get the results one day earlier than they are given out.
