"As long as the message is getting across to the punter then why worry?"

That's is point I am trying to make, in a rounabout way.
You have rules in language (no matter how pendantic)... if you started to disregarding these rules, before too long will start not to get the message-- if that makes sense!

Newsreaders getting pronunciation right is part of their professionalism-- it adds to their authority I suppose. Confused

A wider issue than just the news, but I've always found it very disrespectful how the events of September 11th were quickly branded as "9/11" - and even more so how quickly after the London attacks last year they were branded "7/7".

I'm so glad to hear I'm not the only one who thinks that. It's always struck me as crassness in the extreme. I just couldn't believe how on the 7th July people almost seemed to be in a hurry to give such an appalling tragedy a catchy name. I mean why stop there - maybe in future tragic events could get their own logo and sung audio jingle as well?

I could not have put it better myself. That statement absolutely captures my own distaste towards the 7/7 moniker.
