Here's the moment it was announced on air by Victor Blackwell:
Larry King, the longtime CNN host who became an icon through his interviews with countless newsmakers and his sartorial sensibilities, has died. He was 87. https://t.co/eWOnYiwla2pic.twitter.com/J61Zr0Kk4N
Larry King was a hero of mine until we fell out after I replaced him at CNN & he said my show was ‘like watching your mother-in-law go over a cliff in your new Bentley.’ (He married 8 times so a mother-in-law expert) But he was a brilliant broadcaster & masterful TV interviewer. pic.twitter.com/1JsXeeZYEk
Yikes that Piers Morgan tribute is one of the worst, most tacky tributes I’ve seen. You’re not surprised reading that that Morgan was friends with Trump - as Piers makes it all about himself.
Then again given who it’s by I shouldn’t be surprised.
CNN US is in breaking news mode. Michael Smerconish has come in early.
I imagine a bit of scrambling going on behind the scenes to try and line up some high profile, heavyweight contributers - closer friends with good memories of working with Larry. Some of the commentary so far hasn't been particularly insightful, although Brian Stelter providing some useful history and context just now.
It's still very early Saturday morning on the West Coast, so will take a bit of time to line up the right people I suppose.
Hope they will put a good tribute programme in one of those late weekend slots they have.

Smerconish is always on at 9 EST but I’m not sure he got the memo. Hasn’t even mentioned it and the LIVE dog is up so I’m assuming it’s not recorded.
