Sky couldn't quite bring themselves to include the 1999 BBC News opening titles in their video montage Wink

What a shame that when every rebrand comes along broadcasters go for the Red Bee pitch.

The Anglia Television logo, the 4 logo, the Carlton hearts and the BBC 1 balloons are all spot on TV branding.

That quote at the bottom about the BBC 2 idents being "so extraordinary and unusual" has made me realise what's wrong with the current ones. Back in 1991 they were amazing and different to anything seen elsewhere, and gave BBC 2 a unique identy. But the current idents, how different are they to BBC 1's, really? You could swap a couple of them over, changing the 2 to a circle and it wouldn't make that much difference.

You're spot on and this is where Channel 4 is miles ahead of the competition. C4's idents couldn't be replaced by a broken up 2/circle as their symbol is unique and used accordingly. It would be a tremendous disservice to their logo if they used it as BBC Two are using their 2.

As many other people have said Two's logo was designed to have things done to it, ie splashed with paint, set on fire, etc. Presently, it is limited to being nothing more than a frame to, let's be honest, scenes that don't really say 'you're watching BBC2'.

That's exactly it - for the most part the '2' is not a physical object, but just a hole, a gap. Because of that, you can't throw things at it and you certainly can't animate it.

If you could do so, it would be much more entertaining, and that's why I'd say the most enjoyable of the regulars now are the 'Cappuccino' ones, where we at least see the figure get 'attacked' - scooped up and destroyed by lumps of sugar respectively.

Limitations aside, the biggest flaw of the whole 'windowed 2' idea is that it forces you to look through the '2' and beyond it to watch a scene. But that's not what it was made for at all - the '2' itself should be the star and not the things around it.

That is why in 2001 L-N developed their original '2' into a character - but still kept it in a sparse, empty environment; so it placed all the focus onto the '2', and the added touch of personality along with the colour scheme gave it much warmth - all of this is utterly lacking in the current symbols, I feel. Seems like the witty, surprising element has gone 'out the window', if you'll excuse the pun!
