I just hope she's going to be able to cope this time - last time when she took on a similar role on the then TalkRadio, she struggled to manage between 5 News and TalkRadio.

Similar role ? This is a 45 minute a week radio show. Talk Radio was a 3 hour daily breakfast show.
My own view on this has changed since i heard the news yesterday.
First of all i thought that's ok, it's a good slot for her. Today however I think this has diminished her somewhat . Some might think err channel 5 news, how can she go any lower but I thought she did a good job when she returned to the show in 2002 . The old news with ITN was a good quality bulletin and she helped make it that.
I thinks she going off as some other presenters have and flirting with showbusiness and it lessens their status and thats a hard thing to get back.

How often do you listen to Desert Island Discs - it isn't really showbiz? Sue Lawley has been quite forensic in her interviewing on the show - it is certainly a role that requires decent interviewing skills - and if anything will increase Kirsty's visibility and credibility. Radio 4 is hardly lowbrow...
Showbiz ? Well i think it is really , it's a celebrity fantasy game cum favourite music show and with it 's long heritage it's a status symbol for the luvvies and others .
Lowbrow ?
Radio 4 's rarely that but this is not going to be as serious as reading the news , it's entertanment primarily.
Like i said it's a personal view and one not shared by five viewers or radio 4 fans who probably do not intersect in any great number and so will not be irritated by her next career move.

No, it's not celebrity. Celebrity is a new development in this country and generally means anyone who that tabloids are interested in, for whatever reason. Desert Island Discs interviews people who are famous - this is different that someone that is a celebrity - and who have acheived something worthwhile. Most people who appear on Desert Island Discs would be unknown to the average tabloid reader and hence not celebrities.
Jade Goody - not achieved anything in her life - famous only for having the tabloid interested in her - celebrity
Maggi Hambling (this weeks castaway) - first artist to be given a residency at the National Gallery - famous
