Fantastic!
Another Scottish great from, the bowels of Cowcaddens on the radiowaves!
I don't think her former colleague from STV times long times gone Shereen knows yet though - someone email BBC Radio Scotland and tell them the good news! lol

Um, look who started a thread about Sue Lawley's departure from the programme right here in the Newsroom:
http://www.tvforum.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=20364
Anyway, both Kirsty Young and Sue Lawley (in earlier years, anyway) are best known as TV newsreaders.

Why's this in the Newsroom thread anyway?

Started because I was talking about the fact that I'd like her to return to news, and was thus opening the possibilty of a discussion on which news programme she'd be good on.

My own view on this has changed since i heard the news yesterday.
First of all i thought that's ok, it's a good slot for her. Today however I think this has diminished her somewhat . Some might think err channel 5 news, how can she go any lower but I thought she did a good job when she returned to the show in 2002 . The old news with ITN was a good quality bulletin and she helped make it that.
I thinks she going off as some other presenters have and flirting with showbusiness and it lessens their status and thats a hard thing to get back.

I think it's the other way round. I think its a presenter of a high-brow flagship of British Broadbasting "flirting" with the gutter tabloid nonsense that is Channel 5.
To suggest that Desert Island Discs can "lessen the status" of Channel 5 is ridiculous!

How often do you listen to Desert Island Discs - it isn't really showbiz? Sue Lawley has been quite forensic in her interviewing on the show - it is certainly a role that requires decent interviewing skills - and if anything will increase Kirsty's visibility and credibility. Radio 4 is hardly lowbrow...

But equally I don't think Desert Island Discs is particularly high-brow.
The interviewing skills required are on a par with Jimmy Young's old show on Radio 2- sufficiently gentle to make sure no one big is put off making an appearance.
I think the appointment is pretty clever thinking really- Kirsty Young is I think perfectly capable of delivering this kind of interview with a degree of charm and wit.
