Is that Charlie Bird's old job.

No, its Ed Mulhall's old job - he retired in April over the States of Fear controversy. The job is the most senior in RTÉ News and Current Affairs, reporting direct to the Director-General and with a position on the RTÉ Executive Board.

Charlie Bird's old job was Chief News Correspondant, which was an on-air reporting role, a sort of "reporter-at-large" position which he had held as long as I could remember and was previous titled Special Correspondant and before that Chief Reporter.

The former is a management/executive position, the latter a journalistic one.
