I know she divides opinions, but I think six months is quite harsh

I think you need to look at it in context. Its a different situation between somebody who works in an office and the presenter in question. The latter is one of the public faces of a major news organisation/outlet who's job it is to hammer home the entire "don't do this that and the other" thing to anybody who watches, and said presenters then goes and does the opposite anyway. That makes their position untenable to an extent at least in the short term. The office worker would probably get away with a written warning and assuming they don't infect the entire office that may be the end of the matter for them.

If you're in the public eye, then it could be argued you have more responsibility to behave appropriately outside of work, and if you don't then expect to get dragged over the coals as it were. We've seen this a few times over with various high profile celebrities over the years who have fallen from grace for one reason or another.

It isn’t her job to ‘hammer home’ the rules to ‘anybody who watches’. Whatever Kay is now guilty of, being a public health/government mouthpiece isn’t something she’s ever done. Kay and her colleagues hold power to account. That’s why she- and Beth- are now completely compromised.

Just a small comment – some have said that Burley effectively gets a six month paid holiday. I completely accept that as suspensions go, it’s quite jammy, and I’d dearly love six paid months off work! However, if I put myself in her shoes I also think there’s a level of humiliation there. If I’d something wrong and didn’t come into work for that long, knowing that my colleagues knew exactly why I’d be pretty embarrassed and I’d dread coming back. Add onto that that the wider public also know, that’s not a position I’d like to be in. By the end of the half year I’d be both craving and dreading coming back.

Please don’t misunderstand – I’m not suggesting that makes it a complete horror show for her, nor do I necessarily think she’d have the same take on it. But I did think it was worth mentioning that it’s not quite the same as annual leave.

The point I was trying to make was the the DM specialises in attacking individuals like a lot of other tabloids. They were quick to jump on KB's failings but not their own. So IMHO the PPE is relevant - they hunt their targets in the interest of sales and click bait. Take the recent example of the jet skier travelling to the Isle of Man which they almost considered heroic/amusing. How would they have treated a refugee from France travelling to the UK the same way I wonder?

Interesting snippet in today's Popbitch regarding the whole saga.. Although a gossip newsletter it tends to have some rather connected informants.. make of it what you will:

Media rumours of 4D chess

Coronavirus conspiracies are ten-a-penny on the internet, but here's one we found quite interesting. There's been a bunch of "Kay Burley's future at Sky News in doubt" stories in the press this last week after she was taken off-air by bosses for breaching Covid rules on her 60th birthday. Why would a seasoned reporter like Kay jeopardise her career over something so foolish? Well, there's some growing whispers that it might not have been quite so stupid after all.

Subject to Ofcom approval, there's a new TV news station due to launch next year. One that's headed up by some old friends of Kay's. Unfortunately for her, she's currently under contract with NBC Comcast. These sorts of contracts, out of necessity, offer very little in the way of wiggle room for employees who want to walk – especially if they're wanting to walk right into the arms of a rival.

Unless she gets let go, of course. In which case, after a certain period (say, six months?) she'd be free to maybe offer her services elsewhere... GB News, perhaps?

Mod edit: quote removed

It's hardly a Court Report in style and study the readers comment and it's anything but legal argument. We're not going to agree otherwise so I'll not comment further.

From Sky News' perspective it would have been rather awkward to have Kay or Beth interviewing politicians about Covid related matters.

For example...
"So Prime Minister, what are you going to do about [insert MP/advisor] who broke the restrictions over xmas by [insert rule breaking event]? How do you expect members of the public to follow the rules if they unable to?"

this is true. whatever you think of her she clearly loves her job. one of the reasons for her longevity. so it is a punishment to be prevented from doing it for six months so publicly.

Samantha Washington is back on air today, Sky News Today 12-2. First time since the Burley birthday bash.
Just thought I’d note that she’s now back on air.

I expect if the whistleblowers had gone to Ryley or HR with dirt on the Queen Bee of Sky News, she'd still be on air now and it would have been covered up. What they did was the only option to get a result.
What result though? Getting Burley sanctioned because they don’t like her?

Not sure it was simply dislike. How about embarrassed over a colleague holding MPs to account knowing what happened?

Wow. Those '' whistle-blowers'' are the ones who should be sacked. To create such a conspiracy against your colleagues and hurt the reputation of the whole channel is just unforgiving.

Didn’t that happen to Richard Keys though someone recorded the feed in the OB gallery and made it to the public, must be people in there recording everything...
