The 'purple' set, as you call it (well, it was actually red and blue) hasn't been used in this or the previous series, which is when it changed to the yellow and pink that they have now (which I think is actually rather hideous - I preferred the old set).
I was in the audience for an edition of it held at a Girls' School in Guildford, which was when I first saw the yellow/pink logo. I thought it was a temporary sign, until I got home to watch it and saw the titles.
The programme has come from TLS since with a matching set, but the red/blue/purple had definitely gone.
I like the old-school style of JD's programme with long-form, in-depth interviews of the sort abandoned by other channels, although the programme seems increasingly incongruous on ITV.
So I was disappointed to read in yesterday's Standard that a major revamp may be on the cards - possibly ditching JD in favour of Andrew Neil or even Tom Bradby.
And if JD was no longer the face of ITV current affairs, presumably that would put his role as election anchor in doubt too?

Though I'm never in on a Sunday to watch JD, I did watch the Meet the Leaders specials before the General Election, this proved how good of an interviewer he was and showed how much he could make Michael Howard sweat. It would be a shame to see him being dropped from ITV if this change took place, but Andrew Neil would be an interesting choice.
Though AIUI his style of interviewing and the style of programme I presume has been inherited from Weekend World? It would be a shame to see that style of programme go, as On The Record did this too, but that was axed in favour of The Politcs Show, which though doesn't use the old style presening, it is I feel far more easier to watch.
I think that it is more likely Andrew Marr will anchor the election progorammes, both for the EU elections, in 2009 and the General Election in 2009/10.
Would be an interesting event if both elections occurred on the same day!

Not sure about that. Andrew is a relatively inexperienced live presenter - though he is an excellent live reporter. There is a VERY big difference between the two.
If David Dimbleby doesn't do the next BBC General Election - I would imagine Huw Edwards (who anchored BBC Wales' Election coverage this year) or Jeremy Paxman would be in with a shout? Both are experience live presenters - Huw is an ex political correspondent, and a BBC One face (he is increasingly presenting events coverage that would once have been Dimbleby territory) and Jeremy is well known for his longer form political interviews (though he is a bit more BBC Two.)
