Jon Sopel is to become the new presenter of The Politics Show.

The BBC News 24 reporter, who recently covered the Tsunami from Sri Lanka and the United States elections, will take the helm on the BBC ONE Sunday lunchtime show in September.

He said: "The next couple of years promise to be fascinating politically and it's an exciting time to be joining The Politics Show."

Interesting, personally thought that Jermey suited it very well. Of course Jon presented it once before the election - presumably to try him out on the programme.

Or they've put Sopel on to boost its reputation in the politcal world, which at the moment is very low.

A number of high profile politicians won't go on it cause it's never clipped for use in bullys later in the day.

Good Jeremy Vine has become very soft, very latter day David Frost. I think Jon Sopel will potentially do a better job.

Glad to hear that Jon Sopel will not completely disappear from BBC News 24, he has simply become one of the most greatest newsreaders we have seen in a number of years. He is authorative, engages well with the viewer and has great chemistry with several newsreaders, particularly Louise Minchin. I'm still waiting for News 24 to give Jon and Louise their own show..perhaps presenting a new lifestyle/news programme in the morning or a new Nine o'clock special, individual news bulletin on News 24.

I think Jon will be just right for the Politics Show. Can't wait when he takes over!

That's September in my diary!

as a member of tvforum watch, i am duty-bound to ask why is this thread in the newsroom? the politics show is not news, it is politics, hence the name.

Well said Couch Potato - I agree with everything you said. Jon Sopel is fantastic, he did some magnificent reporting during the election period from the BBC Election Bus. He is fantastic on BBC News 24 and would actually suit Breakfast very well as he is energetic and fun but delivers so well.

During the coverage of the French Referendum he did some great top of the hour anchoring and even though it was raining very hard at one point managed to continue unaffected.

My favourite lineup for Breakfast would be Jon Sopel and someone like Katy Kay or Lyse Doucet. Come on Breakfast give them a go...

I think it works out well for Jon, he's excellent in political areas, its definatly his speciality. Glad to hear too as mentioned that he wont be leaving News 24 - completely agree with the sentiments about him and Louise, they are a great on screen couple and do a grand job.

I'm assuming he will have Fridays off - and why not, most others do on News 24 for some reason! Another regular slot for Tim Willcox beckoning anyway!

It's current affairs isn't it? And there is a news summary at the start of the show. Do you have to be so pedantic? For goodness sake they are discussing supermarkets on the other forum!

I wonder if that is as phoney as when Ministers resign to 'spend more time with their families'?
