I dont know if there is anything going on with Calendar but for the last couple of times that I have caught it ( this week). The news has been presented from the main news room with a plasma screen to the rear and left of the presenter.

Yep - there's extensive discussion and captures over in the Yorks & Lincs thread

I find it odd that the way that Granada Reports are telling their viewers are getting a new look, is by a rather oddly voiced Lucy Meacock in a competition for Valentines Day, and to make sure to tune in for a new look Granada Reports.

I hope the content of the progamme changes aswell as the studio.

I wonder what background Granada Reports goes for? I hope it will be a view of Manchester rather than loads of blue squares!

I must say that each time a new set is introduced in a region it does appear to be an improvement. The London Tonight one looked awful at the launch, but Granada's doesn't look too bad (still an awful programme though!).

One thing though is the big screen is really wasted behind the presenters - it be better if the layout was more similar to ITV Wales News with a screen to the right and the desk/sofas and plasmas to the left (or vice versa!) so a host can stand up and use the screen for a report!

Does anyone know yet whether Tyne Tees is getting the new-look set? I just can't imagine Mike Neville looking comfortable on one of those 'sofa-benches'. I'm fairly certain he was actually born with a desk in front of him.

They wont get one until they move out of City Road studios - and if the in-house team for set design still exists, they may play with the layout a bit. Can't see Billingham getting one of those sets - the studio is a bit on the small side - and there really isn't any need to either.

You should watch Calendar one time and see how they use it. they use the set really well- especially the screen.

Just reading the programme statement for 2005, and this is what it says- read into that what you like:

"Distinctive sets will be commissioned to enable both news services to transmit separate programming to the North and South of the region.
The two new studios will also be used for nonnews programming such as Soccer Night and Around the House."

Also the new building is called 'The Watermark'

The what ? The in-house team for set design ? What's that then, does it actually exist ? Seeing as though the studio output from Tyne Tees is virtually nil, what are these people doing all day ?

Why does one of the smaller ITV regions need a set design department, I'd have thought they'd have seen the sharp end of Charles Allens sword by now.

This may have been covered in the depths of the Midlands thread, but have Central News East moved into their Birmingham Studio yet?

Yup, they moved a few weeks ago, there's some caps in a Central News East Thread somewhere.

Small it may be, but it covers a large area - and of course in days of yore they were the main driving force behind "Highway". They also assisted with Border's Lookaround set re-design.
If you want a small region, take a look at Border. The only reason they haven't seen any cuts is because there's virtually nothing there to cut!
