I was in BBC Radio Cumbria a couple of years ago. In terms of a tv studio they have a small room which had the cream and red backdrop from the 2002 regional look, and one camera (no autocue or anything) with a desk and chair. That was pretty much it. I don't know if these were the same premises from when they previously did an opt
Sounds like it was a fairly traditional BBC Self -Op Presentation studio, which was, I suppose, relatively common for daytime bulletins of the time. I still think it's a bit extravagant on BBC North West's part to have separate daytime bulletins, but I suppose it was all part of making Cumbria feel loved!
Self op studios were literally a seat against a backdrop (sometimes CSO but often just a photo blow up), a few lights, one camera with autocue and the ability for the presenter to opt out from network and read headlines with some illustrative stills. Most self op studios didn't last into the mid 90s especially as expectations to run moving video and clips got greater. But those that were left working (notably the one in Leeds manned by Peter Levy) , were doctored to allow fairly complex bulletins. I think they even did the 6 1/2 minute late news bulletins for Hull from Leeds' Presentation studio before the new centre at Leeds opened... might be wrong on that.
Most centres still have secondary galleries for shorter bulletins, often still referred to as 'Pres' but they're usually manned by at least two people these days (presenter and tech op). I don't think there are any self-op pres studios left in operation at all. I imagine Radio Cumbria's studio is solely used for down-the-line interviews these days...
Of course the BBC are now more regional in England.
One interesting omission is Cumbria. Strange because when Cumbria was moved into the North West in the eighties, they did have separate daytime bulletins.
When it went back to the North East, it was dropped.
Interesting - I didn't know that. Did these bulletins come from Manchester? If so, does anyone know how/where from?
Today.
As reported above, they came from Carlisle.
Indeed, when the Lockerbie disaster happened, across the border but not far from Carlisle, the Cumbria News was axed temporarily so that facilities in Carlisle could be used for coverage there.

BBC North West used self-op for Breakfast, late and weekend bulletins until about 2003 I think...I remember they used the full studio for the Commonwealth Games bulletins in 2002, but afterwards it was back to the clunk-click buttons of the self-op, and I think it was finally retired about a year later.

Shame those days are gone....
Breakfast sting (THUMP!) Good Morning.....
It didn't look too bad with the 2000 (mustard) set, but when they added the Oxford Rd window on the CSO set it didn't look very good.

No, it always came from Hull - from a tiny tiny room in BBC Radio Humberside's old building. Couldn't have had Clare Frisby and Christa Ackroyd just a few metres apart

Well it's the last Lookaround tomorrow from Carlisle.I thought that they would do what Westcountry did finish on the Friday and start off the new programme on the Monday.
Interesting to see Heather Larcombe back Presenting the shorter bulletins over the weekend and at lunchtime today.I guess most of the others have now left over the past few weeks.

Heather has been back for a few weeks now infact as they must be really short staffed. It would of been nice to see Susanna back on the bulletins again too!
They have done it midweek so the 'transition' is less noticable I think. They are currently airing promos with Fiona, Tim, John and Helen in Cumbria somewhere and then in the Carlisle studio with Pam and Ian - stating 'Lookaround is still around'. Its all so false and pretend .
If only they could just use one name for all bulletins, like Yorkshire do. With Calendar/Calendar News. As I can see the main editions being branded Lookaround/NET for the first 15 minutes, then a sting saying Tyne Tees & Border News with the rest of the show called that.. Looking messy.

They cannot please everyone! At least the Lookaround name is staying.
I think Heather has still been with Border as a Producer/Director.
I agree it is so false they even had a report about something to do with Northumbria and a Tyne Tess reporter doing a piece from a third world country, ( please don't jump down my neck can't remember where or what it was about Just thought it was odd when they mentioned Northumbria) easing us in gently no doubt .
