That is one thing that is VERY unlikely to happen. Whilst ITV1 is inevitably losing share as the multichannel fragmentation continues - ITV2-4 are building stronger profiles. If anything ITV should be investing more - as with a strong portfolio of channels appealing to very distinct demographics, they are able to sell much more desirable advertising slots.
Remember - not all viewers are equal. If you are a high-spending professional - a channel that you watch is very important to some advertisers (airlines, high-end consumer electronics, watches etc.) whereas if you are a busy mum on a limited income, a different set of advertisers want to sell you stuff (budget supermarkets, savings schemes etc.) You need to have channels that pull in both audiences - not just one. Trying to make shows that will pull in both at the same time is increasingly tricky as there is expanding choice in the market.
Trying to make one channel the be-all and end-all is like trying to be King Canute in this day and age isn't it?
Not really. It's the channels that go for broader audience profiles that are doing best in this market. The more niche channels are the ones falling by the wayside quicker.
Though ITV's digital channels aren't niche in the same way - they are general channels still, but with a more targeted audience profile. They aren't going for single genre channels (just as the BBC and Channel Four don't either, in contrast to the UKTV offerings) - though some have concentrated more on some genres than others but not exclusively.
Recent casaulties include SportsXchange which was basically all about exchange betting with a few live sports, Overseas Property Channel, and The Fight Network.
Yep - though you can't really compare these poor quality (they were technically and editorially pretty awful) with reasonably (though not lavishly) funded ITV digital offerings.
Also - Overseas Property Channel was doomed in the current financial climate. I can't imagine that many people are buying overseas at the moment... So who would pay to advertise on such a channel?
I think the closure of the aforementioned channels indicates, more than than anything, that people don't usually want to watch rubbish quality output...
So at the moment, broader is better.
Yep - but as the mainstream channels have lost audience share to multichannel, shoring up your total share by having your own slice of multichannel viewing is a reasonable proposition. (ITV2-4 have done good business for ITV, just as the +1 channels have for both ITV and C4)

Well then that way Ofcom are unlikely to say no then if half the staff are gone anyway. I think Ofcom would appove even if they still held on to their past staff load anyway.

They're making no assumption then OFCOM will approve the plans, yet they've already axed the staff and pretty much said they'll do what they like whatever OFCOM says anyway.

Looks like things are already changing in the Westcountry as Mark Tyler is on The West Tonight when he is the main sports presenter on Westcountry Live.

Nothing significant of any changes seen so far apart from a couple of the familiar reporters havn't been around on Westcountry this year. Not long to go.
That's nice news for Helen Pearson, she made a big move going to Border and leaving Westcountry two years back and it's worked out, just.

Jermy was not entirely honest in the language he used in his letter though.
How euphemistic!
Surely a much more truthful description would have been "fired".
In other words, expect to lose even more colleagues in 2012, and you could be one of them.
