Although the new region is ITV South West, the new news programme is proposed to be called 'The West Country Tonight'

I have no idea what they will call the TTTV/Border programme. I wouldn't be surprised if the Lookaround name was retained.

The Lookaround name is stay at least for the 15minute roundup in the Border region. Its only the name thought everything else is going to be completely different!

What will be interesting is whether the viewers will notice a deterioration in service with two-thirds of the staff gone.

As ITV has always been grossly over-staffed I suspect not.

Which is why ITV is right to press ahead with the rationalisation - it makes sounds financial sense and ultimately that is what will determine the future of the ITV brand.

Is this just your personal view, Mr Guru, or is it actually based on something tangible?

I don't know how these opts are going to work exactly, they might signal them with titles or they may just be included as a normal (but prerecorded) segment of the show which I personally think is most likely.

If that does happen I doubt they'll suddenly go from North East Tonight (or whatever) to Lookaround. I know they said the Lookaround name would last, doesn't mean it will, but if it does then I think the whole programme will use that name.

For Somerset and Bristol South West is fine - not so sure about Gloucestershire though.

Would have been nice if they kept Westcountry in my opinion, sounds warmer.

Well we in Gloucestershire do think of ourselves as being in the same region. I remember a phone in over this very issue on the BBC Radio Gloucestershire breakfast show. All the callers said we were in the south west; no-one said we were in the west midlands or any other region.

Historically there is certainly a ring of truth about it. The BBC have, AIUI recently - over the last 10 years, been far more keen to adopt new technology that reduces production and transmission costs in the regions than ITV have. Ironically, ITV were ahead of the BBC in this regard 20 years ago.

I have been watching Tyne Tees' North East Tonight, seeing as I am currently in the North-East on holiday and official confirmation from its newscasters......"On Friday, it will be Bob's [Johnson, weatherman] last day". It is a shame.
So that means I think this will be the first time Tyne Tees does not have its own weather forecaster - before Bob, there was Wincey Willis.
Unfortunate, not only because Bob is an excellent weatherman but this will be the first time no Tyne Tees-only meterologist in over 20 years.

Has a formal date been announced for the changes yet?

* apologies if it's buried in the thread.

They cant say a date yet as Ofcom are yet to give final approval! But speaking to people within ITV they are being told March/April next year so its only a few months away.

I always thought it was around March/April next year, but on last week's final edition of 'The Westcountry Tonight' they were hinting that the new news programme would begin in 'the next few weeks' which had me thinking of 5 January?

The programme is still available on the ITV Local website. It was mentioned during the interview with the Head of ITV South West. Perhaps I misunderstood.

Are you MAD???

As someone who has worked both for an ITV region and the national news, I can tell you it is by far the most under-funded, short-staffed operation I've ever experienced.
