Any details on whats happening with Thames Valley yet - any idea of job numbers in Abingdon?

I don't know about the job numbers, but Thames Valley is being merged with Meridian South and Meridian South East.

Although ITV Thames Valley is a product of the Charles Allen era at ITV, it was rather pointless creating it anyway, I'm sure people would have had an idea that the majority of ITV Sub-regions haven't got long left before they close, merge or relocate.

Creating the Thames Valley region allowed them to shut the studio at Abingdon though - a significant cost saving. ISTR that Abingdon was on it's second fit-out and was running early SD digital gear (including first gen Quantel Editboxes and Clipboxes?) so in need of a refit for 16:9 and more modern editing platforms (allowing desktop editing)?

Meridian had already shut the Newbury studio a while back (to cut costs and avoid a refit from the original 1992 set-up?) and were operating two studios out of Northam and one out of New Hythe when they co-sited to Whiteley (rationalising three studio sites to two and then one), so closing Abingdon and merging with the Whiteley operation was another cost cutting exercise?

The current 3 co-sited studios at Whiteley cover the same ground as the original Abingdon, Newbury, Northam and New Hythe sites - so moving from four studio sites to one is a major saving, in staffing and maintenance costs etc.

By making two of the three current regional operations sub-opts they can cut staff (both technical and production) costs yet further - in particular there will be far less editing (and no doubt the sub-opts will all be VJ produced)

I'm sure from what I've read that all of the Thames Valley Region will recieve the one Meridian News programme.

There was some talk of the Oxford transmitter returning to the Central region with the Hannington transmiter remainng with Meridian but AIUI that's been scrapped and so Meridian will cover an enormous patch, albeit with three prerecorded 'local' inserts for what's currently Thames Valley, and the two Meridians.

STV and UTV are not included in the merging or Regional News. Although I would like to see the ITV1 BorderSco licence go to STV so they can broadcast Scottish News for Scottish Viewers living in the Scottish Borders.

Possibly the region that's set to lose a lot of it's high profile talent?

Claire Weller, Tim Curtis, Caroline Oldrey, John Francis and of course our very own Stephen Lee heading out to Australia.

All excellent journalists and presenters that are deemed too expensive in the modern day world to be replaced with clones with the charisma of a waxwork droid. Cheaper, but at what real cost?

What ITV are doinng is ridiculous. They are getting rid of presenters and reporters that have many talents. I would sooner rather see 5 minutes of adverts in 6pm Bulletins than to loose local news.

Bob hasn't lost his job - he's off at the moment due to illness and certainly hasn't faced the axe. Mind you, he might decide to leave in the near future. He's got his fingers in plenty of pies elsewhere so I'm sure he'd be happy to give more time to them.

Mind you, I can't watch Central these days because of the reason I gave about about the Anglia cut backs. There's just not anything that makes the programme special and all the reporters sound like they've got a cold with their faux Chris Morris style nasal voiceovers.

The whole thing winds me up and the quality is only ever going to get worse.

Instead of fussing over Local news just manually tune into STV if you are a SKY Viewer............
