Does the merger mean that the news studio will become defunct in Carlisle, and everything broadcast from the north east? Or will the studio still be in use in Carlisle for the shorter bulletins?

To put it bluntly, to blame Public Service Broadcasting for the state ITV is in at the moment is so far from the truth - it's their commercial decisions, not their PSB responsibilities, which have seen their share prices tumble.

Everything would be broadcast from Gateshead. Border TV would be just a newsroom

I would not bet on it.

several versions of the ITV plan were for EVERY studio centre to produce at least 2 full shows, plus opts; and be on sites with technology support for a full range of production services.

Most of Border's studios are now locked up with only the one used for the Border News and for Lookaround still in use. I suspect the Harraby studios will be sold once Border TV vacates them.

I'd bet on that, the opts are going to be recorded, so I guess they'll use the other Studio available at Gateshead to do that, as you say Border will probably only be a Newsroom, as will Westcountry.

Central are getting a particularly poor deal here, only getting the 6 mins instead of 15 mins in the sub-opt, what with them having seperate bulletins for about 20 years compared with Yorkshire (who are getting the same deal) where it is more recent

Anyone have any views of Thames Valley, would it have made sense to break it up and lump the former Central South bit in with Central West, or do they have more affinity with Meridian South?

so would it be likely that border would move, seems if they just become a newroom they could occupy any old office space with a few phone lines and an ISDN or two rather than the "wasteful" building they'll be in now

I would like to think that Central South moves back to Central and Wesley moves back to Central as thats his real home land!

while we all speculate about the choices ITV have made, I am sure most of us will spare a thought for the many ITV Regional staff who find out their fate later this (tuesday) morning.

In many areas, ITV are/were one of the few viable places to work in the TV industry.

Who were the first company to introduce split region opts btw? I know that TTTV introduced theirs full-time in around 1984, and had the facility to broadcast from the Middlesbrough studio back in the 70s, although it was only used for major events.

Indeed, and in Carlisle probably the only place to work on live television. Plymouth weren't far behind.

I find it so ironic that some areas with the highest ITV local news viewership (and therefore by extension the areas where the local staff have been the most effective) are the ones facing the chop. It is a complete slap in the face for the loyal staff at Border to be treated in this way.
