Being in the Granada region it makes no difference at all for us, same goes for London and Wales, as they're the only English Regions that don't offer sub-regional News.
I feel sorry for viewers on Border, although their programme is in the smallest area (excluding Channel) their's seem to be the strongest in terms of viewers, and the fact that the BBC doesn't provide a Carlisle based TV Service makes it strong for ITV. Although the 6.05pm Opts are looking more likely, its a shame that one programme from Gateshead serves all of the North East of England, Cumbria, Isle of Man and Southern Scotland.

And some are going to have to be taped as well by the look of things.
TTTV only has two studios, and three sub-opts (two of which are outside the area).
I'm not sure how ITV can justify a separate opt for Cumbria, an area of less than half a million, while two subs with a combined audience of nearly 3 million have to make do with a single opt. Political sop if you ask me, and one that is likely to come back and bite them at some stage. Not to mention the backlash in ITV PLC's strongest local news region.
And if ITV are bringing in short subs in the areas where the main programmes are being merged, how will this affect the northern opts? I can see three possibilities:
1) They will have to divide Studio B (currently used for the south opt) into three broom-cupboards for the opts for Bilsdale, Caldbeck and Sandale;
2) They'll tape them, at least two of the three anyway;
3) TTTV will lose its sub-opts altogether, meaning that the NE loses more than the rest of the country. Again.
I'm assuming that the old names Tyne Tees and Border will have to go -- which means that TTTV will die probably weeks before its 50th anniversary -- shame.

Probably not. I do catch NE Tonight occasionally but it's already such a shadow of its former self that I find myself watching the train-wreck that is BBC Look North instead. Frightening.
If they 'retire' Bob Johnson (which they may well have to do depending on how they handle the weather service) I will almost certainly stop watching altogether.

Re. the sub-opts issue in the North East/Cumbria/Scotland - I believe the plan, if they're told to do sub-opts, will be to pre-record all 3 of them and play them out during the show from Gateshead. This will probably mean that the same presenters doing the main show will pre-rec all 3 of the opts earlier in the afternoon. A bit crappy to be honest!

In the long term, Scotland wise, OFCOM has also said that under their 'Evolution' model, the Border Scotland sub-region could well be joined up with Central/North regions to form a single Scotland-wide license in 2014. The regional split between North, Central and Borders would possibly remain
