Stuart from Plymouth.
Plymouth - even saying the word shrivels my gonads so Christ knows what it must be like to live there.
But I guess you must be really up to speed on the media scene in Plymouth.
That's presuming there is a media scene in Plymouth.
And when I mean a media scene in Plymouth I'm not just talking about fat feller with poor body odour who sells the Plymouth Evening Echo outside the railways station.
In anyone's language that does not constitute a media scene.
Stuart from Plymouth.
Stuart ... now there's a poofter's name.

Ashley is not a poofter's name - it's a girl's name.

No decisions as yet because Ofcom has to give its verdict on the matter and I dont think they are even looking at them yet but their views are not due to be announced till next year. Surely they will have to take in consideration the public campaigning and government opinion?!

As seems to have to keep being reiterated ( Rolling Eyes ), ITVplc is a company, a business , and therefore it's all about things like profit, advertising revenue, shareholders etc, they're not a charity or anything.

Any non-BBC broadcaster in the UK surely has every right to argue that they should not have any Public Service Broadcaster obligations at all? Therefore, the fact that ITVplc clearly would like to ultimately be relieved of their PSB requirements, and that Ofcom seem happy to gradually work towards obliging this desire, is not at all unreasonable.

The day that ITVplc should have to take public campaigning etc into consideration, is the day they can argue for that very same General Public to start paying a fee to recieve ITV1 regional programming.

the reason ITV should have firm PSB obligations is clear: It has priority broadcast spectrum after switchoff.

Unlike other all other digital broadcasters, ITV, 4 & Five are not just another channel in an open market (like Mr Grade's lackeys would have people belive) They have reserved space and top EPG slots on DTT and control the majority of the multiplex space to broadcast.

You also have to remember that not all freeview channels will be available to many after switchover - many transmitters filling in the coverage will only carry a few services.

If ITV do not want 'expensive' regional obligations they should hand the licence back and use purchsed capacity to broadcast whatever they want. Of course ITV want the regional ad revenue, but not the public obligations that come with the right to use the priority spectrum.

Its is a business, and ITV have huge commercial advantage by using PSB broadcast spectrum

I can't remember when I last posted in this thread, but I'd like to offer a quick analysis of why ITV shouldn't be scrapping regional news bulletins.

  1. Regional identity and the regional heritage is one of ITV's core assets . Before Granada and Carlton started buying up every broadcaster under the sun, the fact that ITV was the only truly regional TV service made it a very important channel. Now the quality of its regional output (in particular news) has been overtaken by the BBC. If anything, ITV needs to now take on the BBC in this aspect.
  2. If there's more investment, there will be better returns. If ITV were to relaunch its regional output with a lot of fanfare, and also to actually get serious about this regional business, it would cost more in the short term, but advertising revenue would increase dramatically.

Usual disclaimers apply: I'm not an expert or an insider, but I think ITV are going in completely the wrong direction.
