Would be funny if Channel were able to veto this! I presume in order to have the newshour STV, UTV and Channel would have to consent as it would effectively dictate when they scheduled their early evening news

I did not like the format of the hour long lunchtime news and I do not like the sound of this.

I imagine Channel would just go along with it. They must be in a pretty comfortable position in their region considering the BBC's equivilent is only a sub-opt.

Hopefully UTV will not agree to it.

STV on the other hand will probably just bang on about the Scottish News Hour, miss any deadline on objecting to the ITV network news hour and end up having to go with it.

It could work quite well I reckon. There's plenty of ways they could do it - for example the national top story followed by 10 minutes of regional, then back to 20 minutes of national, then another 10-15 from the regions, then a national end. Or it could vary every day depending on the news.

One problem with integrating the national and regional is that the regions can't be as flexible as they used to be - some would have to know how long their slot is well in advance so they can record it. ITN couldn't suddenly change their mind at 5:45 There's also the issue of duplicating stories in the regional and national, they can get away with it more in separate programmes, it will take a little co-ordination if it's all the same one.

It doesn't really make any difference to them other than possibly having their production teams on shift for half hour more. Scheduling wise it's already an hour of news.

You also have a problem with the tone of a programme when it is all one programme.

Imagine the national news leading with 100s of deaths somewhere in the world and then linking to the region who are doing a very light programme coming live from the local country show, it is acceptable when they are different programmes.

It often was a major change in tone when the regions used to hand back at 6:55 on BBC1 for the headlines, you would end with friendly banter and then straight into the most serious news of the day.

I doubt it since STV has done alot of work and has planing, so I bet there grab the chance to opt out

Reporting Scotland stopped doing that years ago.

Although you'd hope that a story concerning 100's of deaths would be the top story in the hour and the top regional story would be more serious than a country show

As did every English Region (plus CI), Wales and NI.

I can't imagine anyone would choose to watch news in this way. What better way to deliver the news but in two separate programes. At least you have the choice then of whether to watch the regional / national news or not.

I don't believe there is any appetite for this, at least you would know what you are getting on the BBC.

And tone is an issue. Regional news has much more of a magazine theme.

I don't know they they stopped having the regional news in the main Lunch Time and News at Ten where they had the headlines then like the beeb the regional headline in with the main headlines then a reminder at the end.

Second suggestion for News Coverage on ITV, ready for 2014...I called it the 18 minute plan. No, it's not a diet! ENGLAND ONLY

The morning News sections on Daybreak are dropped. Instead this would be replaced by 3 sponsored Weather and Travel sections. National News on Daybreak would consist of 3 x 10 minute segments.

All news would be dropped during the daytime, leaving ITV to concentrate on a integrated 18:00 (06:00) National/Regional News package that lasts half a hour. The Regional section would last 13 minutes with a couple of more regions than the present effort (again this will still be cheaper than the current package).

Within the 22:00 (10:00) half hour News package, I propose a 5 minute opt out for the Regional News.

Again with this idea I feel ITV plc should also provide a half hour Politics Show style show (National/Regional) and continue to provide 'Tonight.' A current affairs discussion programme (such as good ol' Central Weekend) for a National audience would be great too...

CITV channel should stay...as previously stated, heavy promotion of this should be provided by ITV on it's channels and hopefully with better programming.
