GMTV convert all their 4:3 sources to full-width 16:9 - so the only way of telling whether the source was originally 4:3 or was proper 16:9 is to see how soft it is...

Hmm, well yes I thought that -- but I'm not very good at judging that really, and my almost dead capture card doesn't help.

I found a few examples in the dragon archive -- the only dodgy one to me looks to be Carlisle.

Yes, on Border News, the presenters have very shiny foreheads.

Indeed. You think they'd find the solution to that - it's not rocket science, is it? Rolling Eyes

Two points about the capture from (London)Derry:

1. How come GMTV are using UTV's Derry studio? Thought they were still at loggerheads over UTV opting out of GMTV 11 years ago?

2. On the rare occasions when UTV conduct two-ways with their Derry studio, it's shot on 4:3 arced into 16:9 with black bars on the side, yet that shot is proper 16:9!

Anglia can broadcast widescreen but all the cameras and footage are cropped from 4:3 to 14:9. It's only broadcast like this in GMTV.

It's the same with the London GMTV bulletins.

It may not be proper 16:9 - it may just be that GMTV fully zoom the 4:3 camera in Derry, but UTV decide to keep it sharp (by not zooming) and live with the black bars on the left and right.

None of those grabs are high enough resolution to judge the quality of the 16:9 picture - so you can't tell whether they are 4:3 ARCed to 16:9 or originated 16:9.
