The regions are supplied a set of graphics and titles, some are completely blank with no pictures and no logo, some are never used. It makes it quite easy for the regions to create their own custom titles from that because all they have to do is overlay a picture onto the spotlights.
The Meridian one looks completely mocked up, its a guess but I reckon they weren't provided with a blank set of titles in 2004 like they are today - and even if they were it might've been difficult to align the pictures with the spinning squares, so they just recreated them from scratch and used the blue moving squares video in the background, mixing in the logo at the end.

From what I recall of the Meridian titles, they had a bit of a funny feel to them as though they'd been created from scratch.
Red Bee Media created both the new BBC London titles and the ITV Regional titles. Interestingly, the BBC London titles were created as a template so that BBC London themselves could put whatever pictures they chose into the sequence and render them. Perhaps this is the case for the ITV regions?

This thread has taken me by surprise - has Cheltenham moved to the (ex-HTV) West region? It must have done, otherwise nobody in Cheltenham would have seen this, being firmly in Central South's radiation catchment area and HTV's signal being all but cut off (certainly not watchable) by the surrounding hills.

I doubt anyone at Bath Road knows what their service area is.
It was the viewer in Trowbridge on duty on the Cheltenham Festival days, so I shouldn't think she'd be any the wiser.
Anyway, the sat truck never normally goes so far from Bristol, so I expect they told them to go to Wincanton for the races and the driver got lost again.

ITV West also produced a unique set of titles for the 2005 Christmas Eve programme.
These were similar to the Meridian idea, with Christmas Images and animated snowflakes replacing the ITV blocks on the logo form-up.
It was produced to a very high standard.
IMHO The West Tonight has improved greatly of late, with Steve Scott being an improvement on Richard Lyddon. He is only on Monday to Thursday due to presenting the ITV Evening News on Friday, when he is replaced by Jed Pitman, ITV West's Head of Sport.
HTV long-termer Bob Crampton presents the weather from the studio, giving much more interaction between the presenters.
The programme finally has some chemistry, and there has been continuity in the reporting line-up for some time.
Friday is the best day, as it has a more informal style, and can be quite funny. Jed Pitman takes the p*ss out of some of the stories, and did not try to hide his shame when inviting viewers to enter a competition to meet Daniel O'Donnell last week.
The knockers should give the programme a reappraisal, as apart from some predicatable studio camerawork, it has really improved.

Another "custom" set of titles for The West Tonight , today 6pm, Friday 7th April.
The programme is an OB from the Clifton Suspension Bridge to celebrate 200 years of Brunel.
(Tempting just to show the late 1980's HTV News sequence, which consisted of a nice aerial shot of the bridge. )
