James Mates unusually did the Saturday lunchtime bulletin today (a second presenter would still be needed for the 9.25/London Tonight, so doubt it was a 'staff saving' measure)
They most probably didn't want Sharon Thomas who presented London Tonight presenting the Lunchtime bulletin, although she as presented the morning news it would make more sense for James to present.
Hold on a minute they had three presenters in for a shift usually covered by just one? What on earth did Charlene White or Faye Barker (I don't know who's week it is) cancel at the last minute? I can only assume that whoever was supposed to do the daytime shift cancelled and the overnight presenter (Jon Gilbert) stayed on to present the 9:25am update. They then neede someone to cover LT (Sharon Thomas) but with her been an unfamiliar face they decided to get the Primetime presenter (James Mates) to cover the lunchtime bulletin.
Or flipping that on its head maybe it's a new rota (post news at 5:30)

Well I don't rate Jon Gilbert, but that is completely besides the point. But since the most regular freelancers I mentioned all are busy else where maybe that's the reason of the number of presenters.
