Who's this woman on the lunchtime?

Emma Walden; reporter and very occasional presenter on London Tonight.

She has always been very good so I'm surprised it has taken this long for her to be given the opportunity to present nationally (unless she has presented before and it's just that I missed it Embarassed )

Ah right yes. I've certainly never seen her present before, so I doubt she's done any other national bulletins, ipi suppose she could of possibly done a 5:30am at some point. She seemed okay from the short time she was on air, you would have though she'd introduce herself on a very rare national appearance. I've seen her do a live on 5:30 before now come to think of it.

Theres clearly been some shuffeling around today! Someone must of cancelled last minute, I presume.

I don't think she's presented the national news for years that's if she has ever actually presented on the nationals. Emma is a ITV London classic, she used to present prominently on London Tonight and report as well. She's occasionally seen on London Tonight. Nice to see her on the nationals, she always comes across as professional, warm and friendly.

Is there any need for two separate anchor teams to handle the 6.30 and 10? Lots of local stations in the US have the same anchor teams at both 6pm and 11pm.

I find it extraordinary too especially when you consider the big cuts ITN have faced over the years.

Heck, why have two anchors on each bulletin. The BBC do okay with single anchors on the One, Six and Ten . Why does ITV News have to be double anchored?

And those BBC presenters also have second anchoring jobs, Sophie does the headlines at the end of every hour on BBC ONE from 10am, George presents GMT on BBC World and Huw does the 5 o clock news on the News channel.

Even if the bulletin remained double headed, It wouldn't kill Julie and Mark to do the both slots each night.

In theory; bigger name = more viewers = more revenue.

I'm not sure if Natasha has had an effect on ITV's ratings or not, but when she moved from the BBC to Channel 5, the ratings doubled overnight . ITV rarely do big or high profile signings anyway, they prefer to grow their own so I'm not really sure what you're getting at.

No that was Channel 5/ David Kermode spin.
The 5 o clock news launched with Natasha when C5 got the rights to Neighbours. Five compared the annual rating average for the old 5.30 news which aired against Neighbours on BBC ONE against just the February [when News ratings are higher anyway] rating for the new 5 o clock news which had the benefit of Neighbours as a lead out.

Of course journo's who are crap at maths bought the whole story and spun 'the Natasha effect'. Even though the ratings for Five's 7 o clock bulletin that she then also anchored didn't increase at all year on year. Shocked Rolling Eyes

Alex, I have to ask. Is she related to "you know who" of the same surname?

I don't know. I have always kind of assumed that she is but have never seen anything to back that up.

Emma was on LT during the LNN era and would present various bulletins. However, I think today was her national debut, despite working for ITN since 2004.

Double headed pairings make ITV News uniquely different from BBC's main programs as well as the majority of sky's. It's partly one of the reasons why I watch ITV News, as you probably have all see me post on the ITV News thread that I love the banter between Mark Austin and Julie Etchingham, if you take that away then what have you got just another copy of the BBC. I imagine all anchors are very busy throughout the day, I doubt it's just a case of turning up hours before, and you could argue that with BBC is there any need to cross over to the BBC sports centre when the newsreader could do it? It's just elements that build up into the news institutions to make them different for the next broadcaster.
