Andrea IMO doing a great job covering the ITV News at 6.30...wonder where Mary is?

on holiday?

What with the Royal Wedding and rehersals before that, it will be a busy time in a few weeks, at a time when normally it is a quiet time.

Having seen her a couple of times, my issue with Andrea Benfield is she lacks any warmth onscreen. Nina Hossain is the same. Two more than capable presenters, but they make a bulletin a little dull compared to other colleagues.

None of the ITV women are particularly warm imo, but I think its quite rare to come across with newsreaders in general. But Katie Derham managed it far more than any other recent female newsreader.

I agree. I find Mary Nightingale quite cold and even Julie Etchingham can be a bit aloof at times. By far the warmest female newscaster ITN ever had was the late Carol Barnes. She was a pleasure to watch and is still sadly missed.

Yes, I would agree with you there. Carol was a one of a kind newscaster and I can't really think of any other female newscaster (in ITN/ITV News terms, that is) who has possessed the same qualities. But, I would also include Julia Somerville too as one of ITV's best female newscasters. She came across as both warm and authoritative, a rare combination. Will be good to see her finally return to primetime television news, exactly ten years after she was shoved out of the way! IIRC Julia was axed to make way for Kirsty Young, and while I think she is a truly professional presenter, I'd rate her style as more cold and sterile than Julia and of course Carol.

Stretching a bit to ITV regions (although I suppose there is certain overlap with ITV News even though she was never prominent), Lucy Meacock definitely has all of the qualities you've outlined above and is the sole reason I continue to watch Granada Reports despite how awful it can sometimes be. It's a real shame she has never had any ambition to front the national news, I'm sure if she did she would without question be ITV's lead female.

Again, sticking with regional news, although she isn't the most professional or authoratitive of newsreaders, Sarah Elliott, also from Granada, is lovely to watch and I'm sure she'd go down very well on something along the lines of Daybreak.

I'm sure it's been mentioned before but Lucy has said she wouldn't want to work in London full time, even though she works in Manchester she does live (and originate from) Chester which is still some distance away. But I agree otherwise she's quite a good host who would be good Nationally, but if she doesn't want to present Nationally, that's her own choice.

Nina seems to be doing a lot of presenting nationally this week... Presumably Mary is on doing the britains best dish, however Julie has also been off a lot. Anyone know why?

I would assume that Mary is still doing Britains Best Dish but is down next week to present. It is half term so Julie may have had a bulletin off so she could spend time with them or could even be preparing for Royal Wedding Coverage.

I wouldn't say Julie Etchingham has been off a lot recently; she's been on News at Ten practically every time I've tuned in.

Theres an article in todays Daily Mail featuring an interview with Mary. Britain's Best Dish has been filmed (at least the semi final has anyway) so Mary probably isn't having time off for that, shes probably just having some well deserved time off. The article says she was doing 12 hour days at Britain's Best Dish and at the last minute had to go to ITN to present News at Ten due to most people being in Libya/Japan. It's a shame ITV didn't 'trust' Andrea with it.

It also touches upon something discussed recently in the main ITV News thread, and Mary directly says

Quote:
She says she was attracted to the show — in which, in each episode six novices compete to make Britain’s best starter, main course and dessert — as it was a chance to present another side of her. ‘When ITV approached me, it was because people know me and they wanted to show a warmer side of me,’ she says.

‘It’s not your job to be warm on the news; you can be empathetic, but you can’t emote.
‘That can be difficult sometimes — but it is my job not to cry.

The entire article can be found here.

Was thinking about itv news presenters, and wondered if anyone else thought that charlene white could do with a a bit more national news exposure. She could quite easily do the weekend news instead of bringing in andrea benfield.
