To me having Al and Nina share London Tonight and the lunchtime news would have made a lot of sense in terms of having recognised and respected presenters fronting both bulletins consistently (though obviously this may not have made sense at a personal or even budgetary level. I imagine perhaps Al wanted to scale back his commitments or remain exclusively a presenter, because otherwise I'd have thought he'd be an ideal addition to the special correspondent lineup in addition to the lunchtime news.
The only national role they could really create for Nina now is to reinstate a permanent Weekend News presenter, or at the very least have her host the Sunday night bulletins alongside either London Tonight or some Lunchtime News editions. However her current role may suit her better.
I wonder too whether with Alastair being dropped from the Evening News returning him to London Tonight has been considered. He'd probably be more of an asset to that than he is the Lunchtime News.
