Could mean that they are investing in HD location shooting and editing for their non-news output (like Tonight)

ITN don't produce Tonight .

No - but they provide the studio facilities for it I believe - Sir Trev is shot in a VR environment at Grays Inn Road (in 16:9) AIUI.

Indeed, but none of the location recording is done by ITN, I believe. It's a Granada production.

I've been watching The West Tonight, via the online feed, It seems like they film in widescreen then crop to 14:9, it looks more natural. If they are doing that why can't other regions do that, instead of filming 4:3 crop 14:9?*

Perhaps they're just framing 4:3 in a more 14:9 friendly manner?

ITV News is definatly filmed in 4:3- it's shown that way on analogue. Why they feel the need to crop it to 14:9 on digital is beyond me.

Last time I looked STV and Grampian were still presenting ITN's output as 4:3 on D-Sat, so at least SMG have got their heads screwed on correctly (IMHO).

That would imply the 14:9ery is entirely a product of Carlton/Granada and the ARC'ing is performed at London and Leeds ?

UTV have been ARC'ing ITN to 14:9 on D-Sat for even longer than Car/Gra.

No doubt the feed available to ITN subscribers as well as the clean feed is most definitely 4:3, this rubbish arching nonsense is done by London and at Leeds for what purpose is anyone's guess!
