Great. Independent Television News News.

Looking around ITN's website, it seems very unclear what they're trying to achieve with their video content on the web. Links to video on the news website go to MSN video, where you have to view an ad beforehand. But it all seems to be available ad-free on blinkx.

And it's not available at all on ITV's website, even though much of the content seems to be lifted from ITV News. Anyone know what the deal is, and what ITN is ultimately planning in terms of online video?

Just a couple of questions:

Why is the top of the home page missing
How much do you think they paid a consultant to come up with the idea of ... different colours!

I don't like it, the logo looks awful, man the designers down there are coming up with rubbish these days, shocking.

I couldn't agree more. Is this really "cutting edge design"?

Seems to me the professional design community is being dragged down to the expertise level of the "Powerpoint generation" rather than trying to represent a Gold Standard to which the amateurs ought to try and make some sort of half-hearted, harf-arzed attempt to match.

It won't be long before every UK company is using Arial and Times New Roman as their corporate fonts and reduce all of their logos to outlined versions of the same. And chop a bit off to look arty.

But how can ITN held them back, when they have no controls over the regions and only provide ITV with their national service (and now london).

ITV News is now responsible for most of the regional news, as well as being responsible for the contract with ITN. I suspect that it isn't a case of ITN telling the regions they can't do 16:9 local news, more the ITV Network centre?

Exactly. I shouldn't imagine ITN is holding anyone back. It is ITV who supply the funds necessary for this kind of change. As has previosuly been mentioned, it is not simply a matter of flicking a switch on a camera. It's a much more far-reaching change than that - and expensive too.

Mind you it is ironic that ITV choose to brand their news as ITV News rather than as ITN when both mean the same thing: Independent Television News!

To be honest I'm starting to miss the old endcap already! Confused

I also read on DS that ITN are investing in HD equipment..

Could this mean they'll be filming in HD then downscaling it to SD 16:9?

Could mean that they are investing in HD location shooting and editing for their non-news output (like Tonight) - or that they, like everyone else, are upgrading their studios with HD cameras etc. running SD in preparation for upgrading their entire operation for HD in a few years.

Loads of US broadcasters replaced their aging SD cameras with HD ones, but ran them in SD into their existing SD galleries for quite a while.

No - but they provide the studio facilities for it I believe - Sir Trev is shot in a VR environment at Grays Inn Road (in 16:9) AIUI.
