Some people on here seem to think everyone sits and watch the News Channel overnight - or at least would if it was live!
They still have live news updates every 30 minutes!
It is undoubtably a blow for the ITV NC - I recall some ITV exec saying when they were arguing for a better placement on the Sky EPG that ITV News is the second highest rated news channel on Freeview.
What doesn't make sense to me is they say Men and Motors should be kept as it's the "least unprofitable" - but surely the launch of a male-orientated ITV4 is bound to hit Men and Motors revenue! Any business worth their salt would know diversification is the key - not expanding areas which already lose you money!
And back to the OFCOM thing - I really do think they should have tighter control of what TV companies put on their Freeview muxs. They seem to give out licences for slots that don't exist, and then companies can do what they like with their own slots - so dump a news channel in favour of a mens channel!
Some flexibility is fine, but IMO if ITV want to change the use of one of their slots on their mux from one channel to another, they should be required to get permission!
And finally - something that's just cropped into my head - and talking of OFCOM, something they probably wouldn't allow, but I'm sure most, if not all, Freeview viewers still have the analogue channels, so how about dumping ITV1 instead!

Some nights (but not always) there's an update at 1am - and I'm not sure that's always live - which is then repeated every 30 minutes for the rest of the night. They certainly don't have live updates all night, every night.

I stand corrected then! I don't regularly watch past-midnight, and if I do it's probably only the 1am bulletin I would catch!
I think what they should do is something similar to Sky Sports News and have an hour-long programme at 11pm / midnight which is then repeated throughout the night, perhaps with ITV News Network as a filler at 5pm.

Inexcusable is a bit strong. Though live news is preferable, there is no rules saying they have to be live at 3am in the morning!
What is poor is what they offer instead - reruns of the same bulletin every 30 minutes!
The reason I say about Sky Sports News is they basically film a magazine show "live" at 11pm which doesn't look out of place being repeated throughout the night.
If ITV News did something similar, more in a magazine style than "News bulletin" perhaps including a paper review and a look back at the big stories covered during the day, it could work better!

Or 5am.
Yeah it's understandable that SSN isn't live through the night, unless there's a major sporting event on it doesn't seem worth bothering with. But for a news channel it's inexcusable.

Maybe Westcountry viewers will get ITVNC back after all:

Although running nearly three months behind schedule, the work to complete the re-engineering of the ITV network is nearly complete. It is understood that ITV News will be re-introduced to the Westcountry sometime during w/c 17th October 2005.
There is still no firm date for the work to be completed in the Border region, although it is believed this will happen in November...

I wonder if it still says the channel will be back in "early 2005" in those regions. Does anyone know?

OFCOM should be controlling this tighter, and personally I think ITV should be under obligations to include their news channel as part of their Freeview portfolio.
ITV wouldn't be allowed to axe it's news output on ITV1 in favour of a nightly mens magazine, so why should they get away with axing their News Channel in favour of a mens channel.
Because ITV1 is a public service broadcaster with a (previously) highly valued digital licence that is worth less and less every day as people migrate to digital and ITV4 is set up as a digital channel with a digital licence. ITV's in digital to make money and is not OFCOM's job t interfere with commercial companies making commercial decisions.

[quote="Alexia"]What a minefield.
The MM issue
Or sitting through an hour of The Sweeney?
They've rush released ITV4 and ITV Kids without really dealing with ITV2's problems and haven't really capitalised on the success of ITV3.

Having to sit through an hour of The Sweeney? The show is a classic.
ITV2 happens to be the most-watched multi-channel entertainment channel in the UK -- taking over from Sky just a few years after it launched. There's no problem at ITV2 just because the programmes don't appeal to you.

Of course ITV aren't required to provide the service, and as such they could shut it down completely whenever they wish, but that doesn't mean that there wouldn't be a political reaction to such a move in the light of the wider debate about the future of ITV and its commitment to national and regional news, and PSB in general.
There's no PSB element to this as ITV News Channel is not a public service broadcaster. As a digital channel it has a standard digital licence the same as any other channel i.e Sky One, UKTV Gold.
