I don't think there would be anything to stop Channel 4 launching a news channel "powered" by ITN or whoever. There just wouldn't be any point.

But surely Channel 4's remit is that of alternative television. What is the purpose of rolling with news that people will generally turn to the BBC or ITV for? Or nowadays Sky News? It serves no purpose to run with it because it's the "done thing".

Out of curiosity, to ITV News Channel viewers: what are you going to watch now?
I know there aren't many of you out there, but now you're left with the choice of BBC/Sky, where are you going to go?
I imagine Sky and the Beeb are pretty keen on finding this out too. Will be very interesting to see what impact the channel's closure has on the other two networks. From that perspective, it's one of the most interesting things to happen in the 24 hour news market over here for a while... more significant in ratings terms than the Sky relaunch.

Whilst my usual news viewing takes place with either BBC News 24 or BBC World, I did use to dip into the ITV News Channel quite often to have a change of scenery and get a different perspective. Over the last few days, I've found myself wandering towards either Sky News or CNN as an alternative.

Look at their coverage of the 7/7 bombings... they have made it clear it is not up their with their priorties of producing Countdown and Deal or no...
C4's unofficial role in these circumstances is to provide an alternative to the rolling news coverage usually running on at least two of the terrestrial channels. They kept their regular schedule, but with updates in between every programme. They also extended their main bulletin and added in an extra bulletin late at night.
Back on topic and there is no incentive really for C4 to launch a news channel. The only way I could see C4 being involved is if they bought a stake in ITN and backed an ITN News Channel.
There is the possibility though that an interactive news service could be set up by ITN (using content they currently use on the internet) - and perhaps C4 support it by linking to it via Interactive TV - but I think it's probably unlikely at the moment.

from http://www.itvlondon.com/itv_news_channel/
The ITV News Channel broadcasts 24 hours a day, with breaking news, live interviews and reaction, presented by some of the best known newscasters and journalists in British television news. The channel draws on the expertise and resources ITV News' talented correspondents and a network of more than 20 regional newsrooms around the UK.
We aim to bring a fresh approach to rolling news offering events to viewers as they happen but also delivering the context and analysis that has traditionally been the preserve of terrestrial bulletins.
ITV's family of correspondents in the UK and across the world offer unparalleled eyewitness reporting of stories as they break - but we believe that's not enough.
With unlimited airtime rolling news channels have a responsibility to explore issues in depth and to carry a range of opinion. ITV's regional newsgathering machine means we can draw on over 100 reporters and 150 camera teams across the UK alone.
Not updated much...eh?

You are quite wrong to cite the fact that Channel 4 don't have their own news channel or that they don't often run uninterrupted coverage on major breaking stories as proof that news is low on Channel 4's priorities. This is simply incorrect. But as others have said, Channel 4 exists to provide an alternative to the more mainstream channels. They also feel that there continues to be a strong appetite for ATV programming of considered analysis and news in depth.
And by your argument, it would hold true that ITV did see news as a major priority by running a 24 hours news channel, which clearly it didn't and doesn't!

This is why we have the 'BBC'. They don't have commercial pressures, as I'm sure you are aware.
The 'ITV News Channel' was a really good channel though. It was definately un-bias. When the 'BBC''s Royal Charter was being reviewed, they had, the interviewee defending 'ITV', and the presenter defending the beeb. It was brilliant. Then they go and ruin it.
Question:
Do 'I.T.V.plc' operate the other 'ITV' channels under contract FOR Channel 3 Network, or do they do it because they want to? Remember that 'I.T.V.plc' is not the real ITV, but just a contractor for broadcast in many of the franchise regions.
Also, who operated the other channels before the 'I.T.V.plc' merger? Was it just 'Carlton', or 'Granada', or a combined effort, or what?
OFFTOPIC SORRY;
I hope that they re-consider the dreadful move, and bring back 'ITV News Channel'!
