I don't see Saturday being dificult at all because of CD:UK as that finishes at 12.30pm. This would be the perfect time for a lunchtime bulletin, and also itv News, so viewers know that no matter what day of the week they will always be able to find the lunchtime news at 12.30. However the disadvantages of this will become apparent when having sport on at a weekend such as F1. itv did experiment with a longer lunchtime news a couple a months ago on a saturday, it was with Lucy Owen and the programme lasted 15 minutes followed by a 10 minute regional summary.

The time isn't the problem - I was just thinking about the audience - though ITV follows CD:UK with a news bulletin anyway.

Hadn't thought about Formula 1 - that would hit it quite bad in the summer I suppose. On the other hand though ITV1 could launch the weekend bulletins in January, then if they do flop quietly drop them over the summer when F1 interupts them!

Going back to the issue of Breaking News - be interesting to see what happens when a story worthy of rolling news coverage breaks.

Major stories as usual will get some extended coverage on ITV1, but it's the events which are generally worthy of a news report, but not rolling news, which will be more interesting. I think ITV will look quite stupid if they can't direct their viewers somewhere.

I suspect we might see something like ITV2 being on standby for rolling news during the day, with ITV3 at night.

Wouldn't it be possible for viewers to be directed to ITVi for more news? Or even a sort of part-time news channel for the bigger stories, available through interactive?

Perhaps a Euronews type service?

Right now the closest ITV has to an alternative to ITVN is CNBC - ITV and NBC share loads of content and ITN provided the oldNBC Super Channel with news. Although they'll probably just say "more later" and direct you to ITV.com/news

So if the ITV News Channel is closing, where will the money go? Have they thought about streaming their newscasts for free online?

Although where do Channel 4 News direct people to, More 4 News I suppose now, but where after that?

Plus I expect there's lots of nice plasma screens around ITV's regional newsrooms that show the ITV News Channel all day. What will they watch in the newsroom now? ITV1?

I think the plasmas are more likely to be on Sky News Smile

Nope. The majority of it will go back into mainstream ITV1 bulletins according to the press release. Perhaps the remaining £1.5m will help pay for the ITV buyout of Friends Reunited? Rolling Eyes

Is it just me that thinks that sounds like ... how can I put it ... a big fat lie?

No doubt whatever money they're 'investing' (what is it about £2million?) will be clawed back from ITN when/if they renew the news contract with them in the next couple of years.
