Awwwwww, Owen Thomas has just presented the 22:00 - 22:30 half hour and reported on the ITV News Channel closure. After the report he simply said,"so sorry." with a glint in his eye.

Quite touching!

Sad Was the "so sorry" a joke or quite heartfelt?

A genuine heart-felt feeling - it was really quite moving! He still said the usual," glad to have your company..."

So Clive Jones describes it as a "running sore". What an arsehole. I was at that meeting today but left before Mr Jones spoke to the company. He has no idea of the sheer effort put in every day by people to make the channel work for the benefit of his shareholders, and clearly no idea of people management.
Frankly if it's a financial decision i hope it's better than the financial decisions these wankers have made in the last few years. They really have no idea how to run a company and i hope he gets his comeuppence. He should certainly apologise immediately for his outrageous and ungrateful attitude!

Ah that's very sad. I do like Owen Thomas, I hope he gets a nice new job on the other bulletins.

I'm in no doubt that those will be Owen's true feelings.

You only have to watch Owen's shifts to see that he always put 110% into every bulletin even if it was just a wet Wednesday in August with no news (in fact he was best on days when there was no news!) compared with some ITV News Channel presenters (or at least one, a women, who is often on around this time) who seemed like they were just going through the motions

No plug for the ITV News Channel from SIr Trev tonight.

But then: "Next on the ITV News Channel, news on the channel's closure" might not have sounded particularly good.

Re: the additional bulletins - this is from an e-mail from ITN Cheif Executive Mark Wood, posted at Media Guardian:

Secondly, as part of its announcement today, ITV is confirming its commitment to increase its spending on news coverage in the main bulletins, enabling ITN to extend its news reporting infrastructure. This means we should be able to provide even stronger news coverage for ITV News programmes. ITV is also planning a number of new initiatives, including possible brief news bulletins for ITV2 and ITV3. These initiatives could create new posts, but we are not yet sure how many.

It's highly unlikely ITV2/3 coverage will be anything more than regular news summaries. These will probably work better for ITV than blocks of news programming - and though it's not a news channel, a service similar to the hourly update C5 offered in it's early days would be welcome.

Another thought - ITV say they'll reinvest the money saved from the News Channel in it's terrestrial output - but what about the savings from not having to pay Trevor McDonalds salary? Surely that's enough to cover the combined budget of BBC News 24 and Sky News!

Quite! Laughing

I think Felicity Barr is pretty safe from redundancy given that she is being shaped as ITV's sport presenter now anyway.

Too true. It's hard not to suspect that a few years down the line there'll be a new regime who will lament the short-sightedness of today's decision. Just like management now openly concede the News at Ten fiasco was a huge mistake.

Indeed, most of the reasoning they've given is nonsense anyway (all that business about news on demand in 10 years time, what's all that about?)

Moving back to Owen Thomas, do you think we here at TV Forum will get a 'Bob Preedy moment'. It's obvious he reads here!

It's so in 10 years time when ITV attempt to launch a news channel again they can say the 24-hour market now is different to what it was 10 years ago so it won't be a flop!

Speaking in terms of radio (It's what I do best...)

IRN sent a lovely message saying that their newsgathering operation won't be affected (despite them laying off a hell of a little of people because they could rely on the TV news arm to gather stories...).

From the beginning of next year they're going to make any raw interviews or press conferences available to stations straight away and not having to "wait until it's on the News at 10.30" like has been form in the past.

Sounds like an interesting move - the closure of the ITV news channel WILL affect ITV and Channel 4's output, as often reporters out on the ground can get information back quickly enough to make sure a fixed time bulletin is kept up to date - ITV certainly made the best use of sharing presenters and reporters which meant when you saw Bill Neely on the Evening News, he'd been filing reports on the news channel for the last 6 hours too.

ITN are obviously going to be rather gutted at the decision...though no doubt they'll be somehow happy the burden of running a service that ITV so wanted to become a profit is lifted means more effort will go into what matters.
