Well this could mean that when there is breaking news, itv will not have any where to break it on because they are not going to use their precious itv1

I thought the News Channel doesn't employ anything like as many as 70 editorial staff....

Who says the job losses are just editorial staff?

PA. Sorry, I thought it had been quoted...

Broadcaster ITV is to close its News Channel, it announced today.
Around 70 mostly editorial jobs are expected to go as a result, according to sources.

Not surprising in any way. I continue to firmly believe that they only bought the former ITN News Channel (itself a doomed to failure project after and rebranded it so that Carlton/Granada could end 2002 on a note of recovery after the ITV Digital/ITV Sport Channel fiasco of earlier that year and never intended to build it up into something of the level of Sky News and News 24

Although they did appear to be building the news channel up, their commitment to it disappeared last year when ITV3 launched and the channel was simply removed from DTT outside of London, to come back within a timeframe which was never adhered to. At the same time, it lost virtually all promotion from the website, and that again it's been freely commuted on DTT again so that ITV4 could nab it's evening broadcast hours, it cemented the total lack of commitment for the channel.

I've been waiting for the closure announcement ever since.

Has the news channel actually mentioned it yet?

I wonder what they will do when it closes down - i'd like to see all the main presenters (not itv1 presenters) around the big desk just having a chat! Then instead of 'breaking news for britain' flying across it would say 'goodbye!'

For me, the likes of Felicity, Leyla, Owen and the random others like Jon Nicolson, Heather McCarthy, Sasha Herriman that made the news channel what it is (was).

That sounds something like GMTV would do...cheesy and needless, because let's face it, they're desperate to get the news channel off the air ASAP.

Question- when it has been said twenty five jobs will go, does that mean mainly presenters? I predict that after the NC goes, ITV will put more effort into broadband news services that they have been testing.

It probably go off air with something like "Breaking news - the ITV News Channel has been..."

And that's that!

I don't see why they are keeping it on air till January - if it's going it might as well go by Christmas!

I wonder how they will go, maybe just act like nothings happening, just repeating the Nightly News and switching down at around 3am.

I imagine that the NC is remaining until midnight on January 16, when the new "warmer" look comes into play.

Yes, Mark Owen read the same script used on the Lunchtime News just before 4pm. Don't know if they also ran it earlier in the afternoon.

No doubt it'll go the way of Granada Plus and be pulled half way through an ad break.

Makes you wonder if during the discussions of the 'warmer' revamp the NC was ever considered or whether they secretly knew they didn't need to bother with new titles etc.

And I wouldn't be surprised if from today there are very, very few mentions of the NC at the end of the main ITV1 bulletins.
