Suggests some disorganisation if it is advertised as running until 6pm yet Freeview cuts off at 5:30pm. If they got there timings right they could organise the news channel so that the bulliten ended at 5:55pm. At this point freeview could closedown, whilst the news channel went into a weather forecast and adverts. If BBC are able to changeover in slightly less time, approximately 5 minutes should be enough time for ITV.
I was watching ITV News on DTT to see if they would mention it, I think they switched off at something like 5.28pm tonight, at first it looked like a technical problem during the Sport, then just flicked off halfway through Lucy Alexander talking about Cricket.
I hope this is a short term thing, the BBC had teething troubles in the early days of doing the same thing with the Kids channel, their solution was to switch of CBBC and CBeebies at 6.45pm, but when they got this right, it was pushed back to 5.57pm. AIUI this is the first time to be directly done by ITV and an ITV channel.
Digital Spy reports today Crown Castle have now confirmed it's offering a new slot on Mux D, with ITV amongst the bidders.
Once again it's advertised as an 18 hr slot, but both E4+1 and Men and Motors operate around the clock.
The only thing is I'm sure even if ITV do get the slot and use it for their News channel, we'll only have the same problem again come ITV5! The only way for the long term future to be secured if for OFCOM to have tighter control over what channels are put on a digital mux - and not awarding licences for channels on space that doesn't exist!
I really don't think there will be an ITV5. Any future shopping and/or gaming channels which they have planned will be on Sky only, what with most of these types of channels being a Sky thing.
Anyone know what's happening in the mornings when ITV4 switches to ITV News - though of course the early hours of ITV4 are filled with teleshopping and ITV Nightscreen.

It starts at 6am as advertised, unfortunately with two back-to-back repeats of the Morning News

What? CBBC finishes at 6.58!
Err... I'll think you'll find both channels go blank at 6.57pm. It takes just over a minute to switch them to BBC 3/4, which come on air about 6.58:30pm.
Clutching at straws here, but now ITV are part of the Freeview consortium (and Freesat) I'd hope they'd realise that even if they as a channel provider don't feel the benefits of having their own news channel, the ITV News Channel is deserving of it's place on Freeview and fits very nicely into the overall portfolio of channels.
