A pretty overwhelming verdict here.
I tend to agree, but I think some modifications are needed.
Namely, the Atrium is very square with lots of straight clean lines - but the ITV Newswall is curved and I felt this made it obvious it was virtual.
I'd suggest the Atrium view would only be in the centre of the news wall, with the ends - where the interview screens usual appear - being made to appear as actual screens throughout the programme.
P.S. And doesn't the studio look so much better now the awful Election desk has gone!

I'm not sure that it did appear that virtual. Obviously I knew it was virtual. The only bit that did seem on was behind Gerald Scarfe, as this was a stationary shot used. But I think it worked well, and even if not used for the main news, it would be nice for it to be used for the News Channel, and hopefully some lovely looking and animating election style graphics to match!

I think the atrium background would be brilliant for ITV News, obviously not as good as the real thing, but it would look a lot better than the pointless floating squares. Graphics can easily be shown on top of the atrium background, as we saw on election night. It would look a lot better than the BBC's fake newsroom.

I think the atrium background worked really well during the election programme, and could be exactly the sort of thing the News Channel needs. It's a common criticism of the News Channel that the lack of a newsroom-style background makes it seem cut off from the news.
I like the idea of having the atrium in the centre of the newswall, with two virtual 'screens' permanently at either end.
A very basic effort, but how about this sort of thing...

That really is a good idea, and shows what the newswall could be used for on the news channel to differentiate it from a normal ITV1 bulletin. Maybe the clock hands on either side of the atrium could move in real time when the 'interview screens' arent in use. The top of the hour could start with a presenter in front of one of the screens as the minute hand strikes, read the first headline, the normal titles played and then the other headlines read from the same position.

I don't think they should use it for ITV News on ITV1, as for most of the time there are story specific graphics shown anyway
They should definally use it for the ITV News Channel though, unlike the idea quoted half a dozen times above, they could just use the usual patchwork 16 screens picture at the side, like they do anyway

A simple question - do you think ITV News should keep the atrium background used for it's election night coverage in place of the blue squares?
If not, do you think the squares should remain - or have you got another idea about what virtual background should be used on the ITV News wall?
