They apologised over the ident introducing the national news: the local news was scheduled for a five minute slot according to the TV listings in yesterday's newspapers.
I dont think that is the case, I think the local was never to broadcast in the first place. The show can't overrun.... its finished at 17.30. so for 50mins it was just chat.

As Brekkie said on page 89 of this thread, ITV are getting away with it as it is a weekly commitment rather than daily and they basically meet that over 3-4 weekdays.

Here is the thing STV, UTV and ITV Wales all need to get 9mins, so at what point does ITV need to cover the backside to make sure those three areas meet the legal requirements?
IE ITV has 4-5mins and if dropped over a course of a year or around 10 that 40mins, YET those three is more like 90mins,

If 9 minutes on every single Saturday was a legal requirement it'd be broadcast, while people on here may not always agree with the decisions made by schedulers I'd be confident in saying that anyone let anywhere determining the schedule knew exactly what needs to be broadcast to meet any legal requirements.

All of which had been completed by 6.15.
The "chat" you dismiss is an established part of the broadcast, including the full rerun of the race, interviews with the winning jockey, trainer etc.

There still had to be advertisements afterwards. ITV is a solely commercial broadcaster, you know. To be honest, at weekends, people are more likely to get news of single- or double-fatality crimes and accidents and developments in devolved politics (Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland) from the BBC, the Internet (e.g. the ITV website) or Sky News. If news in one of the regions has very serious ramifications it'll probably also be covered on the ITV national bulletins.

The style of presentation for that afternoon summary foreshadowed the first two years of the BBC News Channel (1997-1999), i.e. male newsreaders not wearing a jacket.
PS: My point, although it refers to attire, is primarily about presentation of the bulletin. It's not my intention to spark a sequel to the Channel 4 "Headscarfgate" kerfuffle.

In which case, why bother scheduling it?
