There wasn't much point in a Lunchtime News programme today! It was 3 minutes long (4 if you include the National Weather) - the regional bulletin was the usual 4 minutes.

I've noticed that, when there is a sporting event on ITV, there is no lunchtime bulletin at all on a Saturday, Sunday or bank holiday Monday, and even once on a normal Monday, i.e. the UK stage of the Tour de France.

I think they should either provide a decent round-up of News (10-15 minutes) - or don't bother.

Given that ITV, obviously, has a much lower level of resources than the BBC, it makes sense to concentrate resources on bullletins at times when there are likely to be more viewers.

They're just on the weekend schedule as far as national news goes, though with an extra regional bulletin. Agree though given the main stories this week they should have been able to find an extra few minutes for the lunchtime edition - I very much doubt every ad break in Midsomer Murders actually contained advertising given they often go up to an hour in daytime with just promos filling the breaks.

I've not seen the lunchtime bulletins this week, but whenever I see a weekend 9.25/lunchtime bulletin, ITV News/ITN do a very good job of fitting as much news as possible into a short slot. Not a waste of time IMO

A very rare occasion you are describing there. How often does ITV show sport during the daytime?

The regional teatime bulletins are much longer this week than they are at weekends, probably 10 mins rather than 5.

At some point I'm the last couple of years the late evening regional bulletin seems to have gone walkabout during the period between Christmas and New Year.

The day I find the strangest is Christmas Eve. Regional bulletins during GMB and nothing else.

Sadly not this year!

But, previously, a short lunchtime bulletin was still shown on such days. For example, on some weekdays during the 2002 FIFA World Cup, a shorter Lunchtime News was shown at 11:50 a.m. I wonder if the decision not to show a lunchtime bulletin at all when there is live sports coverage at lunchtime is a cost-cutting exercise on ITV's part.

I remember, not so long ago (possibly the yellow "car-park" era), ITV would show a full-length late bulletin during this week - followed, as you say by regional news. Technically, Tuesday to Thursday this week are "normal" working days - that's the point I'm making on the frankly pathetic length of the Lunchtime News.

As South Today says, not even GMB regional updates aired on Christmas Eve this year.

I remember that well. It was during the Christmas period in 2009 and 2010. I guess that it wasn't getting adequate numbers of viewers so ITV reduced it to a weekend-length bulletin. In 2011 there was still a late regional bulletin but that ceased afterwards.

It's not much different from the BBC having shorter bulletins on BBC One on the weekdays between Boxing Day and New Year's Day. I guess that the broadcasters want to let employees spend more time with their families during the Christmas period and it's a quiet time of year on the political front.

Well if everyone is at work nobody is going to see it anyway! Wink
