Is this the first time we’ve seen three people in the studio since social distancing began?

Wierd layout on News at Ten tonight.

Reporter on each side of the table with the screen usually on the left removed.

This is the one criticism about the current set. It's inconsistent between shots especially with those screens (and especially on the evening news) it's gone one minute and then back the next.

This is however the first time I've seen it on NaT as they seem to be more consistent.

Surely its more difficult to change the elements between shots.

Studio 1 at ITN does have portable green screen platforms they use for their different bulletins, to ensure they can have the set view they want. That has been the case since they launched this look in January 2013.

In Studio 1, there is the usual complete green screen wall for the studio. Each desk area is surrounded by a three sided green screen backdrop, one area for the larger desk and platform, and other area for the smaller desk and platform. The two desk areas actually face each other.

However when required, portable green screens can be used, to present a news wall if needed, for example it was used during the elections for stand up presentation. The portable screen is made of course from pure green, and and can enable pop up virtual screens to be used. A bit extra for the set.

Now I am not guessing here, I am going by what someone saw on a college visit to ITN back in the summer of 2019. They got a full tour of Studio 1 and the ITN Newsroom, and also got to see the ITV Lunchtime News being produced. They were told by ITN production staff, that if required, there are portable green screens used in Studio 1 for additional presentation.

Hope this helps clear up things?

I thought for the main bullitens they just projected a faint representation onto the wall. And why would they go to the effort of moving it between shots only a few seconds apart.

They use them to hide cameras, which IIRC is what the discussion stemmed from, where they would otherwise be in vision. It's quite clever really, gives you an 'invisible' camera.

ITN have taken the path down the VR route and don't seem to be going anywhere from it. Since 2004, they have embraced the green screen world, and I wonder if there was another revamp or tweak, what would forum users on here like to see adopted by ITV News in 2021?

Should there be different VR backdrops for each bulletin?
Should there be a brand new music sequence, and abandon the News at Ten theme which has been reworked more times than a Doctor Who story plot?
Should there be a more dedicated look for News at Ten again, as was the case for 2008 - 2009?

Let me know. Thanks.

I think they should definitely update the titles and music - they will never completely change the theme as it’s almost as iconic as the BBC News theme, but a refreshed theme would keep it up there. A new set design too would be good. As they use VR they could pretty much change the whole look and feel with just changing some bits on the computer! Maybe adopt the Election type studio set up? I did notice an ITV News report about a month ago that Julie Etchingham was interviewing Joan Armatrading if I remember correctly and they used the Election VR set which looked really fresh - so they could easily adopt this for the main bulletins.

Finally, they could re-work News at Ten too with new titles and a new set. I agree with the other comments on here that the set and visuals still look good 7 years later, however; it doesn’t hurt to have a refresh now and again! Maybe they will seen as ITN is celebrating 60 years this year so might have a revamp for the new year to make a new era?

Guess we will wait and see! ITV introduced the new look in the 2nd week of Jan in 2013 so could do something similar for next year.

“Almost as iconic”? Shocked

That motif’s been in place since 1967!

I'd like to News at Ten stand out more, sort of Newsnight-style, but I don't think the main ITV News brand needs changing at all. Everything still seems as fresh as it did in 2013 IMO.

I think being the same but different is the perfect compromise and hope when the next revamp comes along they continue along that strategy rather than standardising everything again.
Be nicer and more tolerant to each other. Them's the rules.
