Is this still the case? How do ITV compare with BSkyB in commercial terms these days? ITV1 may be the biggest commercial channel - but ITV the biggest commercial broadcaster? In revenue terms, probably not?

But under that same thinking The X Factor shouldn't be making NaT should it? 19 million people watching the final is interesting, perhaps remarkable, yes but - according to your thinking - not news. Or at least no more so than Julie Andrews being able to return to singing.

The X Factor final was news because it had only just happened, whereas Julie Andrews has obviously been planning to return to singing for some time now. The BBC also ran with a 'could the ratings save ITV's future' slant on the story, which is important because ITV is the nation's biggest commercial broadcaster.

Well I would assume, under the basics of your argument, that when Gordon replaced Tony that wasn't newsworthy because it had been planned for some time? Or Obama being inaugurated, as he had been elected two months previously?

Clearly I'm dreadfully exaggerating it but you get my point - and actually you could argue Julie Andrews returning to the West End will help transform the West End's poor ways, much akin to the "Any dream will do" type programme!

And your argument is still very much defeated by the Susan Boyle/ Diversity stories NaT aired every day earlier in the year. Nothing about that was newsworthy - at least not for a mainstream news bulletin.

That's a really good point. As you say, ITV1 is easily the most watched commercial channel in the UK, but it would be intesresting to see how ITV and Sky stack up in terms of revenue and profits etc. Anybody got any stats?

Ok fair point.

BSkyB makes just over three times as much as ITV, but I guess you could say ITV is the country's biggest terrestrial broadcaster in terms of revenue and that would be correct. ITV2 and ITV3 are also the most watched digital channels out of all the flotsam on Freeview. Personally I think ratings are what matters in terms of which is the biggest broadcaster, not revenue, but that's just my opinion.

Yep - but three of the five are public service corporations of one form or another - so it is really only ITV1 vs five (you could include Channel 4 but they have no remit to make a profit in the same way as ITV and five do)

Ratings are important - but if they don't generate enough revenue then they don't mean that much in reality. The bottom line is that eyeballs aren't worth as much as they used to be - advertisers are spending less, and aiming their spend more carefully. The X Factor and Britain's Got Talent generate huge ratings - and I suspect there are enough of the right demographic to appeal to many high profile advertisers, but I suspect there are a lot of the less-desirable demographic in that audience as well...

And, of course, Sky make you pay them to watch the adverts that make them more money! (Genius...)

If anyone wants to see some old ITV News and London Tonight reports, plus the presenter intros, then 4music is using them to introduce former Christmas Number 1's in it's 'Hits and Headlines, Christmas Number 1's 95-08' programme. Aired this morning, but I expect it will be repeated at some point

Late-night shopping, or a Christmas party perhaps. There'll be a reason he can't do it - probably as simple as swapping shifts with Mark.
