EDIT: From the wideshot you can see that this has been replaced by a yellow covering, possibly the same fabric? It's not a cyclorama, it still follows the semi-circle of the set in the same place.

It is a cyclorama. They can be flat or curved. It has a pocket in the base which has a weight in it (usually chain) to keep it taught. I can see it.

And it will be white.

Well it all looks very similar to the new ITV brand now but I doubt every region will get the new look I mean can they all afford it?

ITV are in more financial trouble than we think if they can't afford a bit of yellow fabric/paint, some new couch covers and to shuffle the lighting about abit for a further 8 standing sets! Shocked

Trust me, all the ITV Regional News sets were the same (albeit 3 different sizes).

The back screen has the same sort of wooden construction as any other TV set (cross panels etc, I don't know the correct term, I'm not a Joiner). It's not simply a stretched cyclorama; it's a very sturdy standalone piece of studio furniture.

It seemed solid enough to me, not just fabric.

I stand corrected on the material - that said, a cyc can be made of wood.

That in essence is what it is - an even surface to be lit.

Indeed, it actually serves no other purpose, so perhaps you were correct. I wonder why they went for such an expensive construction, when actually a fabric cyclorama as you described would have no doubt been cheaper.

Not brilliant at all, though personally prefer them to the 2006 titles, but not a patch on those from 2004. And why relaunch on a Wednesday - would waiting till Monday really harm? I was hoping for a change to the theme too.

I thought it was thursday today??

So it is. Confused Still definately not Monday though!

I have to say that I like the new Central News look - because at least it's consistent with the national news. The truth is, the 'brand realignment' may have brought the national news in line with the ITV1 branding - but it completely divorced it from the regional news.

I see what you're saying but really ITV News hasn't been aligned with the regional news since February anyway. Branding wise a generic look works if it compliments the national look, or a non-generic look contrasting to the national news, but when it falls somewhere in between it ends up looking a mess.

The studio is a problem really - the curves of the existing regional set mirrored the Theatre of News well, but had their own identity. Now we have a situation where the regional sets are curved with horizontal strips, whilst the national set is mainly straight edges with vertical strips.

Caught a bit of the 10.30pm bulletin - the logo on the astons is a bit cut and paste really - be better off using an "ITV NEWS Central". Also no URL - did Central reinstate the itv.com/central URL at the beginning of the month when the itv.com/local site launched?

I thought it looked a bit naff on the first viewing, but now I don't think it's too bad.

Not necessarily. They'd have to install a track to hang a cloth, and their lighting rig may not be strong enough to carry one. I have no idea how short their shoestring budget was.

A piece of plywood scenery may well be less expensive, and it means it can be moved, rather than being constrained to where a track is hung.

2 things, to make the 630 news perfect they would need Nina in the studio; therefore we have our Friday team back, and did anyones regional news cut off to adverts, calendar had no weather and were half way throuh a report.

I think Anglia News (East) got cut off too. I didn't notice a weather forecast.

It would seem that the Granada team were aware that there would be a break - they got the weather forecast done and finished the programme as normal before going to the adverts.
