The lighting needs to be sort of inverted so it is yellow hints with lots of black.

I did think that, when I first saw the way Central have lit their set. However, don't you think that would look a little macabre?

I could be wrong, but I'm just thinking that would look only slightly lighter than Steve Scott's late night crime programme, which has a black background and green lighting onto the perspex panels.

Yea, but if they did that it would fit the colour scheme.

Lighting is a versatile thing, you can have any colour you like.

Black, unfortunately, is not a colour so that would be quite impossible.

They're stuck with frosted white plastic panels. They're not going to be able to make that look like ITV News without using black drapes - which won't work in small studios with flat soft-lighting.

It looks ghastly as it is but there's not much they can do without expensive changes.

Ill conceived.

Any redesign of the ITV News should have factored how effectively the look could be replicated at little or no cost in the regions.

Twits.

I wonder whether they tried that and it just looked meh? Confused

It would be interesting if any TVFers had images of other trial lighting designs for the studio.

I do wonder why they have decided to use 'par cans' in front of the perspex. The previous lighting effects were achieved quite well by having all the lights behind it (apart from the main studio lights, of course).

Perhaps Gavin, who has some considerable lighting knowledge, could explain why they would go for such a move, other than to show extra bits of kit in the studio rather than to provide a different effect?

EDIT: I just noticed Gav posted while I was busy drafting. Tsk! Shocked

If you light your talent far away from the background in a focussed light, that works.

You couldn't have your presenters on the couch with guests using the same technique, or they would be in little pools of light.

True.

Going back to my previous point, they could just paint the piece of plasterboard behind it black and add some yellow downlights behind the thick latex panels.

I have to say that I like the new Central News look - because at least it's consistent with the national news. The truth is, the 'brand realignment' may have brought the national news in line with the ITV1 branding - but it completely divorced it from the regional news.

So, given that a big-budget set redesign is never going to happen in the regions, I think Central's done about as well as we could have hoped for.

The chrome parcans (as you can see from the opening at the front) are open white - not coloured. They're lighting the frosted parts of the perspex to make it stand out. Looks like its being lit from above too. Presumably it needs the contrast between it and the yellow increased, otherwise the yellow will bleed though the frosted perspex and look grubby - neither white nor yellow,

The yellow is presumably provided by LED battens which are pointing to a cyc (flat white cloth) wrapped around the back wall of the studio. The box running along the base is concealing it.

From what I remember, it's not plasterboard: it was previously covered with a very light blue fabric of some sort to diffuse the lights both from above (onto the back screen) and to avoid glare from the LED lights and par cans underneath (onto the perspex).

EDIT: From the wideshot you can see that this has been replaced by a yellow covering, possibly the same fabric? It's not a cyclorama, it still follows the semi-circle of the set in the same place.

And the 'blue' lighting...

If you're going to paint something black, then you may as well not have it there at all, apart from to hide the studio wall behind it. That would be rather a waste of the versatility of the set. They didn't look as though they came cheap...they are quite well made and intended to be permanent sets...not the sort of thing you would take apart easily or waste the opportunity of future functionality.

True. I wish they could make it darker though, the yellow isn't working well for them. Perhaps just allowing some of the yellow to bleed through so it isn't weaker in spots.

Well it all looks very similar to the new ITV brand now but I doubt every region will get the new look I mean can they all afford it?
