Don't get me wrong, I am aware that the two are closely linked and have been for many years now - it just seemed slightly unusual to me that ITV used NBC's theme this year. I did like it very much while watching, but in retrospect, the last one used in 2008 was actually much better - more dramatic and imposing (not sure if that was also an NBC one?)

I did love the title sequence this year though (which I think also followed NBC) - it was really nicely designed.

The 2008 one wasn't NBC's Election theme, but came from NBC News' 'special edition' library, for example NBC Today normally opens like this, although for the death of Osama Bin Laden, they opened like this.

Thanks for those videos Daniel, do you know if NBC has ever used this theme on air? It's a great arrangement.

Those links were to show what I meant by 'special edition' library. It is in the background at around 5:40 in this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kAQeZS9GsoU

I really liked that theme as well. When I heard 2012's I was really disappointed as it sounded weak and wishy-washy. I'd forgotten its melody about 5 minutes after it aired, yet I can still hum the 2008 one 4 years later.

Would be interesting to see if I'm A Celebrity helped lift NAT's ratings last night as it has often done in the past. 9.8m is a strong lead-in but would be great to see whether or not the BBC/ITV gap narrowed at all.

Is the Daily Mail running out of news? Still interesting though! Laughing

I'm sure there was one European broadcaster who used the 1999 music for their news, bongs and all.

Crikey, now that's what you call ripping off!! I could understand the theme music as the downside of basing the themes on The Awakening means they're library music and so can be used by anyone who pays for them. But the graphics and studio too?! I wonder if ITV/ITN has had any say in this?

Nicky, you're correct about the 1999 music being used by an Eastern European country, although I forget which one now. The 2004 music was also used by (I think) a Canadian broadcaster, and possibly an Australian one too ISTR. Channel 4's theme (Best Endeavours) has also been used in the USA and for the film Pale Rider.

The theme that they use is someones crap 'megamix' type thing from Youtube, rather than tracks from the EMI Library.

Nicking ITV News themes around the world is a much more common practice than most of the forumers might think. Here are some examples, beginning with a full bulletin of the earlier-mentioned Russian station - with some slight changes. Why did they have to put that ticking sound to the background?

Continuing with Kanal A in Slovenia, that still uses the 1999 theme for their nightly news programme, Svet . (8:49 in the clip)

In Victoria, BC, Canada, the local CTV affiliate CIVI used the 2004 theme for their newscast, VI News .

In Germany, private local station Rheinmain TV used a cheap edit of the 1999 theme in 2006.

When it comes to fiction, the 1999 theme was used in the PS3 video game InFamous to introduce "USTV Breaking News" appearing at random points during the game (sorry but I don't have a clip of that). It was also used in The West Wing to introduce the political talk show Capital Beat . (1:05 in the clip)

C4 News' theme was used by the now-scrapped NBC affiliate KTSP in Phoenix, AZ during the 80's.

In 1985, Best Endeavours was also used by ABC in Australia with their short-lived news programme The National - with a weird (but nonetheless fitting) headline bed.

Original version of The Awakening used in cartoon Journey Back to Oz . The familiar part starts at 6:40, beginning with the part used as the closing theme on NAT at the time.

A local station in Sardinia, Italy, uses a rather interesting remix of The Awakening to introduce Telegiornale Videolina . I recall this one being posted earlier somewhere here.

And finally... I'll give out the new ITV logo (not) to the first one who knows, which station did WJAR nick their early 90's news theme from.
