Posted in the US thread but thought it deserved a mention here - there was a brief trailer on NAT tonight featuring Alastair promoting America Decides 2012. The studio seemed to be more or less how it normally looks (with the rectangular shapes, etc) but very blue with US regalia here and there - glad to see yellow won't be taking a prominent role for once. Wink Sorry I didn't manage to get a screencap of it.

I know ITV News gets its fair share of criticism these days, but I really do think they're unrivalled on election nights (UK and US), even though the ratings are never very fair during the big events. They're always much more engaging and entertaining while retaining a sense of authority. Alastair a natural host for that stuff too, I was never keen on Jonathan Dimbleby - a quite poor choice really, election night always felt quite dull with him at the helm, "battle of the Dimblebys" or not.

Was US 2008 Alastair's first time heading ITV election coverage? I know he was part of a team on previous election nights but I don't think he was lead presenter. Or did he do the US 2004 on the news channel??

I'm sure he did the 2004 election.

Either way you can't get much better than the early '90s-2004 "voice of God". Razz

I agree with that. I think his name was Andrew Burt, or similar. In any case, he's never been rivalled since.

Yes, that's the man. Andrew Burt was the original Jack Sugden in Emmerdale. His voice-overs were excellent. The two things I remembered about the 1999-2004 era was the theme tune, and his voice. I think he beats Bruce Hammal by a definite margin.

You're not imagining it, Gaz. It was originally planned to have a female voiceover but it was changed to male at the last minute:

Is that Victoria Coren?

Anyway, it's a shame they didn't use it.

I don't think its her. I swear Victoria Coren was the woman I talked to at KC regarding my broadband.

Anyway, I'm glad they didn't use it - it has no gravitas. You need the sort of woman who does a sat-nav voice to announce the news.

Has anyone spotted Mary's specs on the desk? Looks like she's borrowed them from Deirdre Barlow! Bet she looks good in them though

I was thinking that. Then I thought, maybe they're Alastair's and he's had to dash off somewhere... Rolling Eyes

Another great appointment IMO. In fact I think all the ITV News reporter appointments over the last year or so have been more or less excellent.

On the subject of the US election coverage... I liked how different the studio looked with blue everywhere, and the glass screen in the opening was a great hark-back to News at Ten. However, it just confirmed what I felt right back when the 2009 look launched - there's no depth to the design of the studio. This was particularly evident in close-ups of Alastair and his guests - while the backdrop looked nicely designed and busy, it was very flat and one-dimensional.
