I can't say I recall that one from 1997. At least they used to make an effort back then. In recent years, all ITN has done is add a sprig of holly or have some falling snow, if we're lucky. BBC News seem to have taken over ITN's mantle.

Here are a couple of my favourite festive ITN endcaps:

1987: http://youtu.be/wS-1Upt1t1E?t=8m34s
1988: http://youtu.be/0dUd1TAB5x4

Rather quaint!

I have to say I love the 1988 endcap... it's just the kind of thing you wouldn't expect to see these days. Laughing

I know. Everything's become so formal, sensible and BORING in recent years! Telly had some creativity and soul back then.

Been doing some YouTube trawling this evening...

Anyone remember this naff Christmas ITN endcap from 1997? I certainly don't! Laughing

I like how there are actually CGI boxes on the end shot before the animation into the endcap starts! Wonder if they had them on the beginning shot as well?

Also, the design of the Christmas trees of 1988 is definitely an improvement over the "trees" of 1987 Laughing

Why do ITV keep pushing the news back to 10:10? for the football and even then it hardly ever starts on time

7:30 warm up
8:00 kick off
8:45 half time/ first half analysis
9.00 second half
9:45 second half analysis
10:40 usually a highlights or analysis programme

This afternoon there is no need to push the regional news back to 6:10

3:30 warm up
4:00 kick off
4:45 half time/ first half analysis
5:00 second half
5:45 second half analysis

If there is extra time then either cut the analysis down a bit or push the news back 5 or 10 minutes if its really needed but they seem to be doing this more and more and its creeping in with other shows moving the news too

This might be quite a minor issue to most people and I agree it is but I have a routine and watch ITV news at ten, then the regional news and then the Sky News press preview, If they keep doing it frequently then I'm just not going to bother and stick with Sky News at ten

The same thing happened with the weekend news, some days it could be on at 4pm then next week on at 7pm in the end I just got sick of the different times and now I don't bother with ITV on a weekend

I don't think the news should be any different for weekends (and overnights!!), yes maybe a separate presenting team but it shouldn't be limited to news summaries and possible 2 normal length bullitens moved to suit the schedule, along with reduced resources! Iy should be in the same position as weekday news, with the same resources!

Even with little incident a football match rarely finishes on the 90th minute - generally speaking it'll be (if an 8pm kcik-off) 9.50pm before the final whistle, and then four minutes of ads. If the news were to start on time they'd only have two minutes post-match analysis before going to ads again - and that's only if a game finishes. The extra ten minutes just gives them a bit of breathing space and the time to wrap up coverage properly.

ITV have a say in the Scheduling of the England games unlike the Champions league. They purposely have the game starting at 8pm (and thus extending coverage to 10.10pm) in order to get in more adverts.

NAT has been screwed around quite a bit in recent months, with it off air for 2 weeks due to Superstar, England games and for the opening and closing episodes of Mrs Biggs.

The music on the titles was ahead of the visuals prompting the images to fly into the 'hero panels'.

Looking around the world

RTE - Half hour weekend news at 6pm and 9pm, though I think the Saturday 9pm start time gets altered a bit for films
ABC/NBC/CBS - Half Hour weekend news at the normal time, except CBS which I think is 30 minutes earlier on a Sunday. Does often get changed for sport
Australia - not too familiar but think they have at least 30 minute of weekend news early evening in the same time slots at weekdays

Of course some channels have very little or no weekend news - e.g. TV3 in Ireland - but it is interesting how in the UK weekend evening 'broadcast TV news', is cut back to a fairly short bulletin in contrast to some other high profile global broadcasters - Channel being the honourable UK exception

To be fair, should credit ITV for the weekend 9.25 update they introduced this year, which provides a good roundup of news in a short space of time. It's not done 'on the cheap'

If ITV have a say then why not start at 7:45, Do we really need 30 minute build up?

Once again tonight ITV failed to start the news on time, switched over at 10 and the previous programme was still on yet the BBC and Sky seem to manage it everynight at 10 on the dot

Any news yet on ITV's plans for the U.S. election? Is Alistar doing it again?
